WRX to EVO... what to look for
#16
Yeah Evo > STI when it comes to modding. I have a ridiculous amount of money into my engine and still only around 400whp. There are stock turbo Evos around here that would destroy me..

That's what gets me. Between the engine and transmission alone it would take me 10-12k to get me into the somewhat reliable 400whp mark in my WRX. 10-12k spent on an EVO would be unreal.

Ah yes, forgot about the WRX Tranny. STI tranny you dont have to worry about that. But 400whp on any stock suby block is asking for trouble. I popped my stock 2.5l in a month at 400whp and just finished the rebuild. Cost me about 2-3x what I thought it would to rebuild with a built block.
I thought about going to an Evo after I popped the first motor as well.

no they dont you are being missleading and have no idea what you are talking about, there is plenty of people that have over 400-500 whp, on stock transmission and transfer case, if you know how to drive then it should not be a concern at all. What do the axles have to do with a transfer case in the first place?? Evo axles are actually pretty damn good for the power they can handle up 600 whp or more

One thing is if one or two people have snapped axle but its pretty common also 3rd gear going out is common too.
In terms of spooling the Evo is superior my WRX has a puny turbo and its at full spool around 4500 RPM.
While my Evo with the mighty FP green hits 22 pounds at 3600-3800

I notice alot of the subies at the autox seem to have alot more mods than the evos with similar lap times. Maybe all the evo owners out there are just better drivers, idk. There is a sti owner out there that has more power, better suspension, wider tires, and still is consistently .5-1.5 seconds slower depending on track layouts.

My biggest is advice is be patient. There are alot of over priced Evo's out there. If your willing to spend 20K you should be able to find a damn good one. I was patient and was able to find this.

I've never seen an evo anywhere that cheap around my area. You'd be lucky to find an 06x below 19K with very minor mods here. Most of the time at 19K or less they have been in an accident. I looked for 2 years straight before I bought mine.
