Never really looked at buying a mdded car this way but I gotta say that sounds like a good idea.

there should be a maybe in there. if i knew the car or knew it was serviced by a reputable shop than i would and save myself the headache. but if i didnt know the history of the car i wouldnt. that could be a whole new world of headaches.

Like most people have said, I would also buy one already built as long as it is well documented. It would save me a lot of time and money to go that route and my next Evo more than likely will not be a daily driver so it doesn't matter that much to me if there are small issues that need to be ironed out before it is back to a reliable running state.

Modding a car is the fun part for me, but you could save TONS of money by getting a car that was modded right. If I could do it again I'd get one that was highly modded.
Instead I decided to buy a car that was modded and put back to stock. I knew ahead of time that most of these are half assed back together just to get it to sell. I figured buying from a long time multiple evo owning member might be different, but sure enough every corner was cut putting this car back to stock. I'm talking one bolt on motor/tranny mounts, stock ecu tuned for some other car and put in just to get the car to run, re used gaskets, wrong sized bolts used, oil leaks, etc. Luckily the seller found a buyer that wasn't going to DD the car as it was...
Unless you can find a car that you can confirm 100% was never modified, you could run into just as much headache getting a previously modded car IMO.

I don't think I would buy my car and it'll be fully built as of February. Even modified cars have quirks and unless you know how it was modified its going to be hard to track down what's going wrong. I might buy one if ALL of the history was documented and with pictures and receipts to prove the mods.
Then again I'd probably just buy a stock Evo X and make my way from there.

Most enthusiasts I know (and I know quite a few) tend to search for a car that has been "unmolested". It is easier to start from scratch than from someone elses abandoned nightmare frankenstein project. However I personally look for cars that have been tastefully modded, but with nothing making extreme power (maybe some suspension/drivetrain upgrades, exhaust, etc.) just to save some money. Built motor is out of the question though, unless the intent is strictly for racing...
bottom line is...expect to be paid less for a modded car...expect to get paid MORE for a stock car. It will always pay more to return the car back to stock form and sell all of the aftermarket parts. If you cannot return the car back to stock form, then don't expect to be paid a significant amount for the additional parts that have been installed, it doesn't work that way.
