Is the Air Filter snorkel needed?
When I switched over to an open element air filter, I got rid of the all the plastic boxing that was there, allowing much better access to other things in the engine bay. I left the snorkel on, since some people seemed to think that the air routed better to the filter.
I finally looked into this today and it seems like no air really flows to the snorkel. The opening of the snorkel is blocked by the hood's rubber dampener from direct air flowing towards it. So the intake system draws air in mainly by suction of surrounding air.
I'm thinking about getting rid of it cuz the foam on the snorkel is all brittle and breaking apart. So who thinks keeping the snorkel is still a good idea in this setup?

Air does in fact make it through the snorkel, but it's advantage to a cone filter would be negligible since the system is no longer "sealed". I'd say its your call to take it or leave it.

I notice a fair bit of a difference after I put the snorkel on, but I am running with the stock airbox and apexi drop in. I previously did not have one for the airbox (previous owner removed it) and I felt less power than having it on. I know a lot of guys that left it, even with full intake set ups.

Air doesn't go through under the hood where you're arrows are pointing but it goes through the mesh screen and through the rectangular opening right infront of the intake snorkel. You can see the rectangular opening in your second pic.

With the stock airbox the snorkel does help suck in air, like a vacuum effect since its sealed. With an open element filter all the snorkel is gonna do is help guide in air that happens to get pushed through. It wouldnt hurt to leave it on and Im sure its still better than taking it off completely. It would direct outside air near the filter to help move away stagnant hot air, imo.

the air never went in from right under the hood. it enters the space through the driverside upper grill opening. then up though the gap that is in the bumper and the core support. id say leave it on. i would have mine on except my radiator has the relocated neck and the snorkel no longer fits
