Juan! What's up buddy! I'm the other Mike from the Phatbotti East Coast Tour in August. If your state is anything like NY, you will be denied trying to get a title/registration. From what I've read, DMV requires you show documentation of damage with receipts for all the repairs. This doesn't matter if the car was successfully registered in a different state, NY must still check your receipts.
For NY, but it may be worth reading:

I am going to talk to the owner this afternoon and try to get the VIN#s and pics of the car.
I live 2 hours from NC, two hours from GA and about 2.5 hours from TN, I should be able to get a title in one of those states . If not I think getting a complete EVO for 5K is a great deal, I can strip the thing out and keep the drivetrain. I think I should be able to get back around 4-5K by selling the rest of the car.

i dont care the cost i would not mess with it its a headache in waiting and your neighbor does not want that headache anymore foolish really to buy this just because the price is low way to many varibles you cant controll to be throwing that kind of money around plenty of other evos out there with far less restrictions

I wouldnt care either...5k even if u cant get a title for it part it out and sell the shell...as maybe a drag car or something. Id still buy it either way!!! income taxes are here...if u dont get it let me know and ill drive down there tomorrow and buy it!!

in NJ if you can buy a salvage car no problem, the problem starts when you want to register a salvaged vehicle. they need to inspect the hell out of the car to make sure its safe, if its denied you cant register the car. i think he couldnt get the plates because the car is so ****ed up.

As mentioned before, if he couldn't get it registered for that long, there is a slim chance you will be able to. I'm sure he knows how much it is worth as well if he bought it off ebay for that much back then. It sounds very shady to me :\.

Dude, if this guy could get a title, why wouldnt he? You seriously think he'd rather sell the car to you for 6000 bucks, when he could do a little foot work, get the title and sell it for 15000? There's something 100% not right with that. Come on....

My best advice is to take the VIN, track it down through the previous state the car was supposedly registered in and find out what happened to the title. DMV's can be a nightmare and it might take getting on a plane and checking on it in person. I've transferred thousands of titles and I've had a few that were nightmares. I've had them take up to a year to fully process as well. Good luck with this one.
