Check out latest Motortrend magazine
If you look at the latest motortrend magazine, which nominates the new Toyota prius as car of the year... you will notice in the performance tests... the car that has the best results (acceleration, quarter mile, braking, slalom, skidpad) is the EVO!
I'm still trying to figure out, based on the performance data how the prius got car of the year...

Maybe because the Prius gets 55 MPG's. It shows that gas mileage is more important to them than performance.
But nonetheless, my opinion is a lil' bit different than their choice (Evo all the way), even though it's quite plausible to see a manufacturer striving for breakthrough (efficient) technology. It's obvious that their point is to make money, but in the end it's what makes the manufacturers evolve technologically (good for consumers).

Prius, although ugly in my opinion is quite interesting technologically... until gas prices go sky high nobody will care. I personally care about looks/performance and I'm willing to pay for the maintence/premium gas that goes with it. Some of US population cares about gas mileage/environmentally friendly... diversity is good. Otherwise who would I have to pass on the highway?

What's wrong with the Prius?
High-performance cars don't pollute, only SUV's driven by soccer moms do. After all, what's the percentage of people in the U.S. that own SUV's compared to high-performance cars?

Prius is great if all you care about is gas mileage and don't mind driving an ugly egg-shaped turd.
Evo should definitely have won car of the year if price/performance was the main consideration.
For best overall car I would think the RX-8 or TSX should have taken the crown since they offer the most overall for one's money. Just depends on if you're looking for 2-door or 4-door.

Yep, and the Jetta TDI 5 speed gets 50 mph stock. Also, you can tune those TDIs for a few hundred dollars and end up with a car that has 130 hp, 250 ft/lbs of tq at around 1200-1500 rpms. Talk about an awesome city car. Also, diesels get better mileage as you increase the power, so figure 55 mph on the hwy in a normal car that'll blow the doors off a Prius.

i think it;'s a breakthrough that they can make a car that gets 55mpg and can accelerate as fast as a normal gas car.
and im pretty sure the 44mpg civic is the hybrid one. normal civics get around 37mpg and yugo's and rabbits around that also. so yes, 55mpg is pretty amazing..
