Any ideas.....

Last night when I was backing into my driveway, While in reverse I was letting off the clutch and slowly backing up and I got a "whine" noise. At the same time I was turning my steering wheel. This morning I got the same noise. Some background- my car is stock with about 3500 miles and no hard launches or any other problems. Any ideas what this noise may be.

Thanks for any help....

Were you backing onto snow or ice? I remember hearing this noise once and i think it was the EVO's stock ice skates unable to move the car back.

Could just be the power steering pump complaining.

Are you near or at steering lock? Or are you going straight?

Are your tire pressures low?

Most cars' reverse gear has more of a whine to it when backing up, and most power steering will give a bit of a whine when near steering lock.

Is this your first manual car, or car in general? If so it might just be one of those two noises. If not, it might be something else like maybe a diff isn't liking being reversed or something?

Thanks for the replies, I wasn't anywhere near steering lock and I was going extremely slow so isn't wasn't the whine can be experienced in reverse. Regarding the tire pressure, It wasn't that, it definetaly sounded like something mechanical.

I didn't hear it today, but then again I had my defroster going full blast thanks to the snow/ice storm here in NY.
