Question Frequent Long Trips ... Problem?

I have been doing frequent long trips on my evo ... about 600 miles over the weekends .. I have done about 9 of them already over a 2.5 month period.

I was just wondering what are things I should be cautious about and is this really really bad for such a high maintenance car like the EVO ?

Is there anything I should pay more attention to in order to ensure that the car is well maintained to produce minimum wear down on the car?

Thanks!

As long as you do all your normal maintenance on schedual everything will be fine. In reality long trips are a lot less strain on a car than the same milage from a bunch of short trips.

I think you're OK, especially if the car is stock or only minor mods. The only special maintenance issue could be turbo heat. Let the car idle for a minute before shutting it down, especially if you've run it hard. Worst case example would be driving hard up a mountain and then pulling off at a scenic overlook at the top and immediately shutting off the motor. Of course your tires are going to wear no matter what you do. Long trips are pretty easy on the car compared to short trips. From personal experience, watch out for deer.

I've done two trips to Connecticut 6 1/2 hours there and back and one to Maryland 7 hours there and back in the Evo. Puts on a lot of miles, but the car takes it great! It gets into a zone at 80-90 mph. The car just loves to cruise at around 3000-3100 in 5th. Just check your oil levels before and after your trip and let it cool down sufficiently before turning it off.

Nah, long trips are alot less harsh on a car than stop and go traffic.. Regular maintainance, and check your fluids before and after the trip just to be safe..

There are guys who drive hot rods cross country with no problems..

Long trips won't hurt anything on your Evo. Just make sure you keep up with your oil changes.

I have almost 20k miles now. I drive from VA to NJ every month. I drive 70 miles round trip to and from work each day...and next week, I'll be driving the Evo across the country from VA to CA....

I don't expect any problems......**knocks on wood**

get a beater for the trips. that motor ain't gonna last that long, and you're wasting ramming speed fun for lousy highway miles.

highway miles are easy on cars - no matter what kind of car it is.

This is pure tripe. Where in the world did you get this information?

And who says the evo is high maintenance?!

Got a QUICK question...I've grown up all my life with the mentality of having the oil changed every 3k miles...wtf is up with the Evo scheduling it to be done every 5k...sorry for the hi-jacked thread...

camdog, do a search bro, you will find varying opinions on oil changes. Threads related to that probably warrant their own forum based on quantity.

with such long trips ...or even short ones isnt the turbo going to breakdown in the long run because of wear and tear?

I heard turbo can be high to maintain *in terms of price* ...would anyone know of an estimate to fix that if ever it were to need repairs?

No, the turbo will not break_down, if you will, on long trips. Short trips where the engine does not reach full operating temperature has much more detremental effects. This can be described as, but are not limited to, sludge buildup in the head, and excessive water in the oil. So all those cars you look at that "grandma" has driven only on sundays for 5 minute spirts, could use some full out highway thrashing (read: excessive WOT).

More on the turbo... as long as the turbo is properly cooled after running (esp. when running really hard/hot) you should not have a problem, pending the fact that you change your oil. And no, no 5k oil changes. Seriously, do you really want that **** running around in there that long? By that time there's enough fuel in the oil to not allow it to lubricate the valvetrain, and the like, properly. I'd be doing 2500.

Anyone that has questions, read more about turbo's.

First off... what "motor" would this be? Starter motor? Rear wiper motor? Wtf. If you seem so concerned about the engine not lasting, why do you own one in the first place? b3w..

Long trips, high miles in short time, equal alot of miles on an EVO or any other car with less overall maintenance than the same miles on a car in a longer period. Don't worry, change the oil and at 70 miles a day you'll be the first one here to 150K with the least amount of headache.
