Buy a high mileage or low miles?
Its been 3 year since I've parted with my IX SE to straighten out my finances and buy a house. Now that finances has been settled, I want a IX with low mileage. We can all agree that low miles will come to a premium price because of rarity and demand. My dilemma is that first its a 5 year old car. Second, forget about warranty. It's an out of pocket expense if something breaks. We evo owners do get carried away a little bit . I've figured why not buy one with high miles. In case if engine fails or tranny fails. I can always have it rebuild. How much would it realistically cost to have an engine rebuilt and a tranny rebuilt? I don't need a built engine but want a solid tranny. Not too crazy about modding so what ever comes with the car will be fine if i find a stock or modded one. What are your thoughts?

Consider more then just mileage. Don't discount a higher mileage evo just because of miles. It could have been babied and those could have been highway miles. Versus a low mileage evo that was raced between every red light.

This. Miles dosent really matter for our cars i think. A low mileage car could of been raced all those miles.

Just get price appropriate for mileage and don't worry about it. Cars break.
As far as the answer to your question, I think I remember a short block being like $2k, i.e. no big deal.
When the transmission craps out, figure $2995 stage 1 from Sheptrans, but you may as well add $800 for the transfer case since it's easier to send it in at one time. Not too ridiculous when you consider some cars, BMW, etc. start at about $4k for stock automatics and at least $4k for engines. Hell, I had a Lincoln LS lose the transmission and it was $4k.
Edit: Not to mention in the Marketplace right now there is a IX engine complete, $3k including turbo, and a 6sp for $900 and a 5sp for $500.

I would look more into service records, that would at least indicate that the owner cared enough about the car to maintain it, and was probably less prone to just raping it to the point of it breaking and then unloading it.

There's always wear n tear with high mileage car. Might be different if it's a single owner but majority 2nd or 3rd owners. It might be easier to track on what has been done if owner has records. I do agree that some low milage one have raced and tracked would be more prone to breakdown. Thanks for
the input

My IX was obviously owned by an idiot before me, but this idiot was the type who just wanted street cred without a fast car.
For instance it had two gauges that show vacuum. (boost gauge with vacuum display, and a vacuum gauge). One was Teed off of the fuel pressure regulator vacuum source. They were in an autometer tripple pod.
Had a full sound system and DVD flip out touchscreen.
BOV (of course)
Full exhaust, stainless. The only real power mod.
Narrow band AFR gauge installed but never hooked up. Wires were still shrink wrapped.
There was a Bolo electronic horn hooked up in the engine compartment.
Apexi turbo timer already installed.
When under the car I found a black Neon under the rear bumper with the wires cut. (idiot confirmed)
Car only had 30K miles on it.... Spent it's life registered in the southern midwest, including regular smog tests from Cali. No bent radiator fins or any sign the turbo was touched. The stock boost control lines were practically caked with gunk onto the clips so those hadn't been touched either.
Couldn't be happier. Car is running great. Clearly they never got around to actually adding power or tuning it. Just looking fly I suppose. Basically got all the boring crap out of the way for me .

i bought mine in january and it had 146,000 miles on it when i bought it... came with 2 file folders of receipts(mods and maintenance) ... there were a few items i replaced right off the bat(only cause i am really **** about certain things)...
i test drove 7 evo's before i bought this one...with a range of miles any where from 30k-to the one i bought with 146k...
the one i bought drove nicer, the trans not as notchy as the others, no whining from the t-case....
as long as you keep up with maintenance and fluid changes, it should last forever.

just try to find and buy a evo with high miles to save on cash then pull the motor and build the block and head for another 5k or so then bam the major work is done. to get a tranny rebuilt is like 1500 plenty of people selling built trannies all the time
