From all the reviews I've read of the Evo 7 RS (with 5-speed) vs. the Evo 7 GSR (with 6 speed), the 5-speed box suits the car better. Reviewers from magazines like "evo" and "CCC" that really push the cars hard on the track agree on this point. So it doesn't sound like we got screwed on the gearbox.
As for ACD and AYC, that really seems to depend on how you drive the car. On the Best Motoring Evo DVD, they concluded that ACD helped the Evo 8 put its power down on the track. I'd sure like to have it. The AYC doesn't really help much on the track, since you won't be hanging the tail out around each corner (not if you want to be fast anyway ). But my rally racing friends say it helps control the rear end on slippery surfaces like gravel. On a street and track car, I don't think it would be missed.
BTW, I'm glad we didn't get the 6-speed, active center diff, and yaw control in the US market. That's how Mitsu was able to sell these cars for $30,000. In the UK, they're paying 30 thousand POUNDS STERLING for the base model Evo 8! From what I hear, the major cost savings in the US came from deleting that stuff. I'm sure many of us wouldn't have been able to afford our cars if the were over $40,000.

As for performance, they say the turn in and grip levels are greatly improved. According to CAR magazine, of all the traction control systems out there where most hinder the driving experience to protect you from yourself, the Evo's ACD/AYC is the only system out there that is designed for maximum performance and to get from point A to point B the shortest amout of time possible.

I have driven both...the 7 RSII has far more grip than the US 8....although this could be partly due to the different road surface found in the UK,...what impressed me more about the UK 7 was the fact that it is better mapped than the US model, no issuses with cold starts, much more linear power to almost 7500 with no over rich problems....I personally prefer the US recaros to live with on a daily basis....the UK/JP recaros look fantastic and do grip you although may be a bit anoying day in day out......hope this helps

Just 2 corrections:
The Evo6 TME as with the Evo 4,5 gsr's before them came with Active Yaw Control rear diff but had a viscous Center Diff.
The Evo 7 gsr does not have the 6 speed... thats the Evo 8 GSR

The ecu, hyrdraulics, sensors are all integrated now. So one tends to talk about AYC/ACD as a single unit..maybe thats what he meant?
The US evo has a great driveline... very good for those who want to learn how to drive / drift a AWD car without electronic trickery. Easier on the pocket to maintain too!

Thanks for the answer. My question was referring to all the Evos (1 - 8). I know the ACD didn't come on the Evolution til the 7. Maybe I just didn't phrase my question.
I thought AYC would interfere someone pushing the car to the limit though?
