Friend of mine dealt with this a few months back.. it was CHEAPER to get a JDM rear end than a factory bumper. Look into the costs and argue with insurance..they'll always go the cheaper route

Rear-ended: replace bumper myself?
Hey guys,
I was rear-ended and now there is a larger gap between the taillights and the bumper. I want to get the JDM rear but I'm scared I won't be able to get it to line up correctly bc of the accident. What causes the gap? Any help on this would be great. Thanks
Fred

do not post the same question in multiple thread...waste of bandwidth
pulling the rear bumper off is a joke...pull it off check the surround underpanels for damage if all is well
-drill out the rivets on the bumper support
-manipulate it with some pliers to fit properly on a new bumper
-re-rivet it and put it on

Your better off taking it to a body shop so if there is more damage you know it will be taken care of instead of being screwed. Trust me, I was thinking the same thing when I was rear, ended. Got a check from the other persons insurance for 1200 bucks. First thought was sweet I can get a JDM rear and pocket some cash. Took the car to a shop anyway, found the trunk was pushed in and the total bill came to 3500 dollars for everything.

I was just in this exact situation as you are. Ended up buying a used usdm bumper from a member here and installed it myself. You can find them cheap from people that swap it for jdms.
As for the gap, just do what chaotichoax said and remove it to inspect yourself. Takes 30 minutes. Look for a how to in the installation section.
