How much power will stock axles hold
#5
You'll hear advice from everyone and their momma, truth is. Even with 365hp, there's been broken transfer cases, transmissions, axles and so forth, and this is coming from AMS tuner chris black. Anything can happen with Evo's and abuse.

My axles have seen over 100 track launches on 420whp/420tq. They hace 80k miles on them. They've seen a few passes making 450+. Only issues I've ever had is they look a little dirty.

I have a 2006 RS with about 48,000 miles on it. When I bought the car it had an FP green and some bolt ons. The car was making 463 whp and 448 wtq. I dont recall how many launches were made on it but it was quite a few. I then decided to go much bigger. After my build the car was making 814whp and 647wtq. Since then I have done 30+ launches on the car with this horsepower. Now all of this was done on stock tranny, trans case and stock axles. Tranny was rebuilt around 20 launches, then trans case case went on me shortly after. All the while still using STOCK axles. The car still has the stock axles now.
I think that it really all comes down to overall mileage on the car and how well maintained everything is. My fluids were constantly changed and inspected. I also have been told many times your much better running the stock axles until one breaks. Then buy another stock axle and keep rolling. The cost of buying aftermarket axles Imo, is just not worth it. The stock axles are made very well and hold up tremendously.

it's funny to see 500hp is the magical horsepower boundary when things are starting to break, same thing when asked "how much can stock internal holds?" a lot will tell you 500hp, where people get this magical # from? why not 480hp 600hp?? there is not right answer to your question, the rule of thumb is more hp/torque you have things will not last as long, and it all have to do with the way car is driven.

I personally have my 2005 with 657hp/484tq have ran the 1/4 mile probably about 80 times with a best of 10.24@136mph and never had anything go wrong that wasn't a tranny synchro. I did blow my engine when an aluminum connecting rod let go about 3months ago, but that's a different topic. Durability is as good and your left leg is patient. If you can slip your clutch just enough your drive train will reward you with a lasting awd system, I do have a carbon clutch though(smoother launches with less impact)

I've done at least 100 launches at 520hp for about 15K miles. I'm now over 800hp and 5K miles with probably only 20 launches. I always pre-load the drivetrain and slip the clutch. As long as something gives (clutch or tires), the axles don't seem to mind!
