compressor surge fp black
I'v got a 2.3 fp black , have all the basic mods and few extra but no cams i'm still running the stock evo 8 cams , so in 3rd gear and up ( WOT ) I will get surge if i'm not at a high enough rpm i also notice if i have people in the car ( more weight ) and going up a hill that will definitely make it surge more easily i try to avoid the surging at all cost and rarely does it happen our conclusion is the stock cams just can't take in all that flow 25psi on the black so I'm going to upgrade soon as i can swing the mula my question is has anyone else experienced this with a similar setup to mine and did the cams help I just hope i didn't hurt the turbo any time its ever surged i'v always let off I'm the paranoid OCD type i just want it to last

under wide open throttle in 3rd gear and up if i'm going flat or down hill it wont happen if the rpm is at about 4k or higher before punching it. When it happens i hear this choo choo choo sound as i'm wide open and see the boost gauge needle jumping all over the place then once the rpm gets high enough say 5k or so it stops and holds 25psi , its a forge bov not sure the exact model , i think the only way to adjust it is to replace the spring inside . I'ts really not a big deal as i have learned to drive the car around the issue by having the rpms up enough before going wide open but it would be nice to resolve it or at least make it not happen as easy as it is at the moment I'm not sure if the bov is the issue or if its because i have stock cams and the engine just can't take in that much air at times . I was saying i let off when i hear it happening but sometimes it will happen for a real short period and then as the rpms climb it stops doing it, also it wont happen at half throttle its only when i'm wide open.

I have an fp black and this happens to me also, but only in 4th 0r 5th gear. It only happens at WOT starting at really low rpm like 2500rpm it'll start surging when I hit 4500rpm. I heard from others with fp black experience that this is just what happens from starting too low in the rpms. So like you I just avoid starting low in the rpm range.

thanks for the reply 3k curious what cams your using yours doesn't seem as sensitive as mine, as mine will do it at higher rpm. Ithink its the combination of my stock cams and the 2.3 making it spool faster. If its just me in the car going on a flat road in 3rd i can get on it at 3800 and be ok but if there is any hill or more weight in the car I'd say i have to be at least 4900 before wot to prevent the surge so this is cool gives me an idea the way yours sounds that wouldn't be bad at all , oh also how much psi , cams , and size of motor ? thanks again

Mine does it sometimes, choo choo choo is a good way to describe it, it sounds like the wastegate is opening and closing. I have the black and S2 cams but I think it also did it with HKS 272's? too but mine only does it if I'm slowlyy creeping into the throttle and boost is starting to build but then wastegate starts to open, then the boost drops so the wastegate closes, then repeats. I would check your wastegate actuator adjustment preload and do a boost leak test.

I have a friend that has a black turbo on his 9 and it majesty the same sound its just the way the turbo is when it spoils from 2500 and up since you go up a hill the car gas to work harder causing the noise

Ok try not to lug the car into boost guys....your ruining your turbo slowly.....down shift and bring rpms up if you want no surge and good boost reponse. Welcome to a larger turbo...have fun!

With ECU boost, you can avoid this surge by tailoring your boost curves to stay out of surge in each gear. Compressor surge under WOT of course has nothing to do with the BOV.

Cams won't fix it, they may help a *little* as they will increase VE, but it won't make it go away.
OP, what wastegate spring rate do you have?
Try loosening the wastegate arm 1 - 2 turns and take a drive and test. The pre-load on my turbo was to high and I had the same very problem you do. I changed cams, tried different boost control methods and it did help some, but not enough.
I loosened the arm by 1.5 turns and it but all eliminated the surge. I sometimes get it in 5th, going up a hill, in the middle of the day after I went food shopping.
Keep in mind, this is something FREE you can do yourself and it will help. The problem was that the wastegate can not open enough because of the much to high pre-load.
