I think we all are to some degree. I used to swear that I'd drive nothing but V8 American muscle...

AFA cops go. I've never had one mess with me. I usually keep a decent demeanor while driving, unless i'm being antagonized be someone, and usually that race is over quickly... (except for that Starion that hung with me at 100 in a 40).

I've come off left and right turns at intersections a little hot at times (no tire squeal though) right in front of cops. One stared at me, another ignored me. It all depends on the officer and your degree of playfulness in the car. I guarantee if I had full exhaust and came around those corners like I did, kept it to the floor and powershifted two gears, those cops would have been on me like stink on ****.

And the whole blocking high beams thing is good, you can still see the cars, but the glare from their headlights is greatly reduced, a positive.

Yes, the wing attracts attention, but as part of the whole car. Even with the wing off, the fenders, rims, brakes, and taillights are still going to turn heads. The attention your getting is also from the public's unfamiliarity with the EVO. Any car enthusiast, young or old, is going to gawk at something he's never seen before. I'm sure 350z, RX-8, STI, and the upcoming Elise are going to have the same attention getting problems.

Oh yeah, Rally Red doesn't help either...

most people look at the wing and say, hey theres someone who THINKS his/her car is fast just cuz they got a wing but no power to back it up (ex: ricy civics).... well its ok on an evo cuz we GOT the power to back it up.... ya shizzel? hahaha

Everytime i've crossed paths with cops they left me alone (as if they know about the evo and the personality type that would drive it). Or I could just be lucky.

p.s. Mine is white and it has a carbon-fiber wing.

The car is gonna get attention anyway because it's red. I'm pretty sure that the wing really gets attention of the local gendarmes (I've been clocked with laser while driving in the middle of a a pack of cars going all the same speed ). So yes, the wing gets attention. Also, the wing does block the rearview at the most inconvenient place, right where a cop car has it's lights . OTOH, it also blocks the high beams from people who come up behind me....
I'd leave the wing in place. It really makes the car complete. After all, that's exactly the way they designed and made it. I like it, it looks good and prolly does some good aerodynamically. Like somebody already said, the EVO is not stealth, if you want to go unnoticed, you could have bought a Chevy Cavalier

You sure about that, Lee? I'd be very surprised if that were the case. I'd bet the body shop will just fill the holes with putty, rub some bondo over the top, paint it, and call it a day. Make sure you know what you're getting into before going ahead.

I took mine off. But I bought a used lancer trunk lid from a junk yard and painted that. This way, I can put the wing back on with the original trunk if I want. I also have a modified OZ spoiler (without the middle post) that does not look too bad on the car.

The car attrackts way less attention. I can park it at a mall parking lot and only a true car enthusiaist will know it is an evo. The rest of people walk right by it like it was a rental car. This is excatly what i wanted.

That sounds like a good idea until you realize that it won't look perfect. I have both spoilers and I'm removing the wicker stud and having the wicker stud hole filled so I can switch between low pro and cf wing. The body shop says they need to blend the trunk lid in to the rest of the car so it will match.

On the other hand I got a STi hood scoop paint matched to my old WRX without blending it in and it wasn't that bad.

That the dumbest and incorrect statement ever. Why do you say that in order to NOT attract attention one has to buy a slow car. Some people simply want to have a fast car, drive it fast, utilize all the performace aspects of the car whitout all the attention. You will understand when you get older. I too once was in the age of body kits, decals and into showing off my car to everyone and everything.

Just because some of us choose not to have portray a "Look at me & my big wing", "Look, I have a fast car", "Look, what I'm driving", "Hey, look ever here, look at me", "Yeah, that was me with the wing that passed you", "Over here, hey, over here, come by and scratch or steal me" appearance of their car does not mean these people do not like to drive fast and do not appreciate and use the car to its full potential.

Different people have different tastes, but one thing that remains the same is that no matter if the car is winged or de-winged, the owner bought it for the performance and the onwers enjoys the car.

If I stoop down to your level, I would say: If you want to attract attention to you when driving a car, you should of bought a Hyundai and put a wing on it.

i am 35 year old single father of 2 small kids. i am a sports car enthusist, autocrossing for the last 15 years. i had my riced out prelude with 18" tires and all. but when you buy a car like this, you have to expect what comes along with it. and if you cant or wont, then the car is not for you. it is like owning an exotic, you will get attention no matter what. spoiler or not. my dad ownes a 2000 s2000 and he still gets looks, and that car is much more muted than the evo.

No, I'm not 100% sure that this is what they will do. I absolutely will find out, though, before I decide on the surgery. Thanks.

I suppose that a better alternative would be to order a low wing, have them remove the center post, paint it, and mount it on the trunk. That way, when I sell the car in a few (or more) years, I can remount the CF wing if necessary, or at least give the option to the buyer. That might be a better solution than the more extreme wingless look.

Excellent comments. I have a question for you, as a former officer. Is it true that red cars warrant more attention from traffic cops than other colors, or is that just a myth? Does a cop in a cruiser say to himself, "There's a red car -- I know he'll be speeding!" I've always wondered if that was case, or more of an urban legend than fact.
