california smog/state referee
So I live in the wonderful state of california. I got pulled over by the san diego police detective that I immediately recognized as the cop I had seen on mtv's "true life - I'm a street racer". I thought oh great. He pulled me over cuz I have a "racecar" evo. He pops my hood and goes through everything. He ended up giving me a ticket for modified emissions and loud exhaust. He tells me that these are non fixable violations and I have to take my vehicle to state referee to be inspected and my vehicle cannot be driven on the road untill I do so. I had a greddy exhaust with no cat. I have put the cat back in and also inserted the silencer the exhaust came with. I also have Injen intake and intercooler pipes, aftermarket dual port blow off valve, aftermarket boost solenoid, walbro fuel pump and ecu tuned. my question is do I need to go back to stock. Any information is greatly appreciated.

I'm very familiar with the CA smog rules and I would say you have to go back to stock, except for what you can hide. It also all depends on if you get a dumb referee guy looking at your car. I would swap the IC piping, air box, blow off valve (unless you can hide that) and also hide your boost solenoid if you can. I know its a pain, but thats the price we pay for modding smog cars in Cali. Once you get it signed off you can put all your stuff back on, until you get pulled over again.

Yeah cali is the worstwhen in comes to emmisions. I get harassed all the time but this is the first time I get sent to referee. And he didn't look under the car I don't think. I was in the back of his patrol car in handcuffs. Yeah he stopped me at gunpoint cuz he thought I was going to run. I guess I didn't pull over fast enough. I was afraid about going back to stock. I don't have all the oem parts. I'm gonna take it to test tomorrow and see what they tell me to change. Ill post an update after the test.

I feel for ya....
I've had NO problems with my setup and it is not a quite exhaust. I've been pulled over for other reasons and my exhaust never created a problem...nor have I had a cop wanting to look under my hood.....that's bs in my book.......yeah there are ******* cops everywhere but in CA I would have to say SoCal is worst than NorCal.....just my opinion.
In your situation I would say go back to stock.... Good luck!

$750??? That's a lot. I've never been asked to open my hood before but this time they didnt even ask. They searched my car inside and out. And he never gave me a reason as to why he was pulling me over in the first place. He cited me for failing to yield to the right, modified emissions and loud exhaust which are all violations they found after the stop. Oh well. Ill have my day in court lol.

If you have one of these injen intakes, they are carb exempt. You need a sticker from Injen if you don't have one on it already.

Yes, just for the injen intake though.
C.A.R.B. used to stand for California Air Resources Board, but it has changed to a.r.b.
Link below, print out the EO # if you really worried bout inspection.
