For all but very good drivers, braking distances using ABS are shorter.
Most drivers cant threshold brake effectively enough to equal ABS.

Can the abs from the standard US evo8 be swapped in to the US evo8 RS easily?

Yeah, I'd like to know if ABS can be added to the RS as well...any idea of cost?

I don't think previous RS versions came with Brembos, but this might just be a US market exception...kinda like the "Urban Jungle" package.

A little off topic (sorry), does anyone know how easy it is to add HID's from the regular 8 to the RS? I've heard $800...but is it just a simple swap? Is new wiring, etc. required?

That is old school. That used to be true in the early '90s when ABS was just hitting most cars. The 2-channel, 4 pulses per second ABS systems were not much to brag about. Most capable drivers could outbrake ABS cars without ABS. I know I could and I did for autoxing.

These days - forget it. The current systems are far superior to what any driver can do, even professional. The amount of times ABS pulsates now and the wheel independence they have is just amazing. You can simply stomp on the brakes and let the ABS take it down a notch if needed. And you can also be avoiding things or turning at the same time.

However, as stated already, the ABS has not yet evolved enough to be better in dirt, snow and gravel. Maybe one day it will sense what kind of surface the car is running on and adjust ABS logic - but this is not yet the case.

In any case, thumbs up for ABS progress!

ABS on a smooth grippy surface is hard to match. but throw any amount of dirt, debris, etc in the way, and it's a mess. Out on the track where you don't usually brake below 25mph, I'd rather not have ABS, but on the street where 25mph to Stopped is the big determining factor between a collision and a "whew". ABS is great.

On the track, I'd be more interested in the 120-40 distances and the fade resistance, where I'd bet the USDM RS will outperform the USDM GSR.

That is old school....
What he said. The debate over whether ABS is superior to a good driver has been settled in the past few years - a good modern ABS system is far superior to any driver on a paved surface.

Sorry to change the topic off of ABS systems, but does anyone know what invoice is for the EVO 8 RS?

If base MSRP is $26,500, I imagine its like $25,000 flat?

Also bear in mind that the RS may have been tested under different road surface conditions and possible different tire conditions. We don't know if the cars were compared side by side or the EVO VIII was simply a reference point on which data was drawn from on an earlier date. Guess I should take a browse at the mag.

How did they test the rs at 4.4 and the the evo at 5.0 in the 0-60 test. It said it only weighs 80 pounds or so less. If 80 pounds equals .6 in the 0-60 I'll be a monkey's uncle.

I thought it's 180 pounds. Also, the Evo 8 has been tested at 4.6 0-60 up to 5.1 or so. 4.4 seems unrealistic and not common for everyday driving.

1) Correct, RS comes with 15" standard disk brakes....

2) RS comes with 15" wheels on 205 R60, your 8s come with 17" 235 ZR45s

3) ABS and no ABS wont make any difference stopping in a straight line....

The comparison Evo numbers were from the 2004 Car of the Year Evo. Same exact location, different day. It's the best Evo number MT has at that track.
