I think everyone was missing the point until you brought up the Evo's limited production numbers. Subaru is bringing 10,000 WRXs to the USA this year. Up until this year the most Evos Mitsu ever made WORLDWIDE in one year was 7,000. This year they upped it to 10,000 for the Evo VII. And most of those are for Japan. Next year I'll guess we might get 1,000 Evos, and they'll be gone in a week at $30,000 if they bring anything close to the real version over (the majority will be reserved before the first car ever reaches our shores).

Daimler-Chrysler owns a big chunk of Mitsu now. Is the Viper a big money-maker for them? Or is it a marketing tool? That's what the Evo will be.

My only concern is that they DO try to sell a lot of them here by tuning UP the base US version Lancer instead of detuning the 300 HP Japan version.

DC, 1st in line in PA.
I'm glad to see that other people have the same reasoning that I do. This further strengthens the argument that the Evolution competes with the STi, not the WRX. If the Mitsubishi is lame enough to bring something over to compete with the WRX, then the car is NOT an Evo. As double chili said, it is just a modded Lancer, not a rally homologation special.

The Evo7 is no longer a rally homologation special. With moving to the WRC format, Mitsu is no longer required to produce at least 2500 similiar cars. That's why you dont see street versions of Peugeots, Ford Focus and even the Impreza. The WRC Impreza has a FMIC and is vastly different from the STi impreza.

The Evo 6.5 is the last true rally homologation special.

Whatever the case is, you still won't see very many Evo VII's in the United States.

mitsubishi is one of the worlds leading economic powers. Thier economic activity beats the majority of the COUNTRIES in the world. I don't think they are going to worry too much about losing a little money on a car. Besides, no matter how many evos are brought over to the states, they will sell all of them. ANd if they dont sell all of them, sales in other countries will be enough to turn a profit.

ok....the evo vii will come to the states next year...tell you the truth...it might not come as the name evolution vii though...it will come next year to compete with the wrx...subaru will bring the sti version as 2004 model so end of 2003 we'll see it.... then thats when they will have the name evo vii or possibly even viii out by then...which is going to match or better the sti of 261 hp's....i think their strategy is looking at what subaru is going to do....we'll see...that's what i'm thinking...but would you pay an extra 4-5 thousand for it? when you can do simple upgrades to the wrx now and the evo style car coming next year....i dont know....we'll see....

Sport compact car said it was coming, but the article when on to say that it wasn't confirmed by Mitsubishi. They just listed reasons why it was coming based on their opinions. I was pretty upset with the article considering the cover said coming to the USA with a lancer airborne on the cover. Pretty crappy peice of journalism.
