Purchasing a used Evo?
Ok guys, I'm looking at possibly buying a used Evo but i'm kind of thinking I should go new. The one I'm looking at is at www.timalauto.net Sorry there is no direct link. I'm not worried about the price because I think I can work on that but I am worried that the car has been modified. Here is a quote:
What do you guys think?
This Evolution VIII has a few modifications though…To start with, there is a K&N cold air intake filter to replace the factory air box. Also installed is an Apex-I Super Air Flow Computer (SAFC) and a manually adjustable boost valve (MABV). The Autometer Boost Guage will register up to 30 lbs of boost, however stock Evolutions leave showroom floors with an estimated 19.5 lbs of boost; this Evolution is registering 22 lbs of boost as the SAFC is correcting ignition timing for added boost. It has plenty of factory features that you will love as well.

I assume this is the link you're looking at for the car? http://www.ebizautos.com/timalauto/d...cfm?iid=166209
If you can get the price right, I don't think there's anything wrong with purchasing a used evo. The only mods that would cause any concern are the MBC and SAFC, and then only if they have been used to abuse the engine. The listed price is a bit high IMHO, but that's normal for car dealerships.

i wouldn't buy it for a few reasons:
1) i don't trust cars that have been modified before unless i know the person who did that.
2) although the car only has minor mods, these mods (afc, mbc) can be quite deadly to an engine in the hands of the wrong kid.
3) the description of the car kinda bugs me. the AFC is correcting timing to adjust to higher boost which just rubs me the wrong way considering the afc is a air/fuel computer.
4) also, the fact that they are selling it "as is" just makes it not worth the risk. you will be better off buying one from a friend or brand new from a dealer.
5) 10,000miles is a lot of miles that you don't know how the car was driven. in 10,000 miles, you can burn the clutch, cause ring damage, shorten the turbo life etc...
thats it from me...
