If its hard to rotate the engine and your backfiring, maybe vapor lock ?

It was not in gear when I was turning it over spark plugs were in still but, I know What it should feel like I have turned it over with a wrench before. You can hear it binding up with something. When I try to start it the same thing happens it just binds up. The timing belt is still tight and I cant check if it's off because it won't turn over. There are no oil or coolant leaks. Coolant was at normal temp when it happened oil level was good and like I said it had the 60k mile service done less than 10k miles ago everything was replaced with oem parts.

take your spark plugs out if your trying to rotate the crank, it will relieve the pressure . if the spark plugs are out and its still hard to rotate, its possible your pistons have came in contact with the valves thus bending them. when you try starting the car does it make a clicking/tapping noise in the head? i'm guessing you have a busted balance shaft belt.

Sorry to hear man, sounds like valve-piston contact :-(

Remove the top two bolts holding the timing cover on, and pry it back gently to get a peek at the belt.

yep, your balance belt went and took out your timing. My car backfired trying to crank too.

you're looking at a head rebuild, but possibly a full rebuild if your pistons got messed up when they hit your plugs. damn...

I would get the head off and see. If I were to do it again, I would have just bought a good used head from here for <$600 and swap over cams and such.

I paid 2200 for everything on my head rebuild.

good luck man

they probably didn't change the balance shaft belt FYI. I had my 60k service done at 56k and they didn't change it.

I took the valve cover off and about ten rocker arms were out. Head need rebuild for sure hopefully that's all. I'm taking the head off now so I will find out soon. I replaced the balance shaft belt along with every part possible installed it correctly. drove it for 7 months with no problems

check your crankshaft sensor that sits on the sprocket, it might be bent or frayed causing the balance belt to break.

definitely not good, theres a good possibility that your timing could have been slightly off, enough to cause your valves to come in contact with pistons, since you mentioned timing belt was still intact. Now if your timing belt had snapped, evo engines are interference engines meaning that if the belt snaps, your valves will stay stuck in their current position, and will contact the piston. More than likely you broke a valve or two and pistons kept smashing the valve piece onto heads causing the bent up spark plug tips. I realize this is a late post and you probably already found out all of this. Anyways, have you repaired the engine or are you trying to get warranty repair?
