How exactly does an EVO go off-time for base timing, aren't they like 2Gb DSMs where they do that themselves?

Edit - I suppose it could be a mechanical thing...

apparently the cam on the exhaust side will not turn all the way with the timing set correctly. so it can be a possible bent valve or the head needs to be re-cut or replaced

Welp, that just got awkward in a hurry... that would definitely explain some things though.

previous owner of the car? Maybe they set the timing that way to hide the damage?

Sounds like it smurf, at least you found that big of a problem before it got way worse. Thats a big douche move to try and cover something like that up that way.

We will get some pics up tomorrow. WHat we found was really surprising. IO am not even sure how the car was driving at all.

The cams were off by a 1/4 TURN...probably 10 or more teeth...crazy. So if the timing notches in the gears are supposed to be at 12 o'clock(lining up with the V Cover notches)..they were actually at 3 and 9 o'clock. There were actually marks added to the gears to get it in some sort of time....wrong time.

The exhaust cam actually seems to cause the valves to hit the piston at TDC. I will get pics up and then give a more detailed idea of what the cause was. We are pulling the head to see what is actually going on. It is possible the head was cut too far and is too short....the valve job may be completely terrible....or the cams could be for a different application. There are other possibilities, but you get the idea. So I will follow up tomorrow with more info.

I feel bad for the customer, because if the head was cut too much, we have to replace it. At the very least, he is looking at a valve job...a couple new valves...decking...cleaning, etc. I am hoping the combustion chambers and pistons look good. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Thanks guys.

John

So if its possible the valves are bent, how come it showed good compression numbers? Also, if the valves were hitting the pistons at TDC, how come there was no tapping noise heard from the motor while it was operating?

+1 i'm also wondering that.

Plus, if timing was that off... Isn't easily see something wrong during the dyno? beside just not making enough power

Edit: Btw op, sorry to hear what is happening to your car.
