I used to get 16-20mpg MAX no matter how carefully I drove. But I made a lot of changes.

I get 18-20mpg when driving it pretty hard, I get 22-24 city, and almost 30mpg cruising 75 or so on highway, overall I average 24mpg from daily use.

And soon enough I'm going to break the 30mpg barrier for sure because my ecu is stock right now.

It actually feels really good not to break the bank to have a fun ride, it's all about efficiency in my book as well. I used to watch my needle just go down after one hard acceleration.

Buy a TDI for a DD. I get 24-25 mpg on 90/10 highway/city. Works for me. I don't beat the snot out of my car that often though, so that may have something to do with it.

Get a tune, make sure tires have proper tire pressure, remove unnecessary weight.

To the OP
  1. Get a tune
  2. Check tire pressure
  3. Regular maintenence

Most importantly, data log. Drive like you normally do and log fuel consumption. It'll show where you're getting the best/worst gas mileage. WOT, I get like 2 mpg. Then use that to drive the way you want or shoot for the gas mileage you're looking for.
