Let me start by saying I'm sorry for the title being a little misleading and confusing. I'm actually talking about price difference here, not overall price. Anyhoo... read below and you'll see what I mean.

I'm curious if anyone else has noticed that the cost difference between Regular and Premium fuel has increased lately. It might just be a regional thing (I'm about 65 miles west of Chicago), but Premium around me used to only be $.20 more than Regular maybe a year or two ago. Lately though, the Premium (93) gas in my area has been about $.35-$.45 more than regular (87) depending on which gas station I go to.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this increase in price difference in their area and if anyone has any idea(s) as to why the margin between Regular and Premium has increased lately.

Im about 100 miles south of Chicago. It seems it has went up a little here. It used to be .20 more than 87octane, almost everywhere you went. I have noticed it going about .25 higher than 87 now.

Same thing going on here on the east coast. yea it was recent that they jacked the price up .40 from regular. Time for me to get a fuel efficient honda or something, full size lifted ram is definately not cutting it, 12 mpg city. I'd rather walk or brave the cold riding my motorcycle.

Samething going on here in the southern states. Im about 20-30 mins from Little Rock and its going on. Theres no real reason why its happening, its just a way for the oil companies to milk another few dollar from anyone that drives a performance or exotic type vehicle each time we use the pumps. Theres absolutely no reason we should be paying the gas prices we for any octane. The oil companies reported a multi-billion dollar profit last year. It costs pennies on the dollar they charge to refine the oil for the gas we use. Another good question is, why does E85 cost as much and in some places a little more than Regular? I thought it was supposed to be a cheaper alternative. 87 at Kum n Go last time I stopped there was 2.99 gal. E85 was 3.01 gal. Whats up with that ish?

I will keep my E85 map in place until 91 octane goes down. E85 is 3.05 a gallon here in San Diego right now. The cheapest I can find 91 octane is 3.65 a gallon....but you have to hunt for that.

Its crazy that E85 is almost the same price here in Arkansas as in California. Its only like a .04 difference. Blows my mind. Whats crazier still is that its just as much as regular gas now...

E85 here is only about $.30 cheaper than 87 now. It used to be a lot cheaper than that but last year the wonderful state of IL voted to stop giving subsidies for Ethanol so it raised the price about $.40 a gallon.

It doesn't bother me so much with the Evo but what really irks me about it is we just bought my wife a Mazda CX7 which also requires Premium. Had I known the price was going to go up and stay up we probably would have kept looking for something that can run on 87.

You guys in the States have it made. Here in Canada Our Shell 91 Octane(Which States is 93) is 1.40L which means $5.60 Gallon. And as for E85 hahaha I think we have 15 Station in canada and that's it lolol. I think the closest E85 Station for me is about 5 hours away.

e85 here is 3.29. I saw yesterday, 87 for 3.13 haha

I dont want this to turn into a debate, but going with what was said earlier.....crude oil now is cheap. I saw on the news a few days ago, that last time crude was the price it is now we were paying 2.20 or so a gallon for 87. So why has the price of gas not gone down a whole lot when crude does. But when crude rises, prices at the pump are hit immediately.

93 is around $1 more than 87 here. Luckily my GT is tuned on 87 for now since I like to save money but it's been going down so I will probably go back to 91 this summer when it's not at the price that it is now. For E85, I have to drive 40 or more minutes. It sucks since when I get my Evo, I want to run it but I'll only be able to when they have it available in the area.

more or less because stations dont have to drop prices and can make a little money.. when prices go up they have to raise their prices too so they dont lose money


same thing with banks and any type of loan.. real interest rates are practically zero today and while banks should make some money for loans etc the rates are still quite high relatively (even though they're at all time lows) and probably won't drop much further than what they are now

At least you guys have 93 octane available.

Here we have tons of muscle cars and people who love them, but 93 octane fuel is unobtanium at any price. A client who is in the gas business told me that it is because there is a shortage of refining capacity. No clue how true that is.
