The closer the bov is to the throttle body, the less area there is to get back up to pressure. I imagine the higher boost you run the more potential for disturbances to your maf reading.
Could also be a clearance issue if there running as short a pipe route as possible, I would think having the bov closer to the tb would give you better response benefits than shortening the pipe route though.

In the Supra community, they are mounted in the bumper openings for visual aesthetics and to make the sound more audible.
I'm sure it's the same reason on the Evo pictured.
