Ouch! Photos/videos like that make me cringe! I hate tow drivers, they usually think they know all there is to know about automobiles, then do things just like this!
Also those photos remind me of an equally painful experience...image an improperly towed....GT-R....

As far as the stickers, I'm not sure. If it was in plain sight I'm sure you could have some sort of an argument. I would hope if the person was there when their car was being towed they would stop and say they need a flatbed before any damage could be done.

that sucks. This is actually a fear of mine.
There was an article recently about a Utah or Colorado state trooper who was giving people fake DUI's and I was thinking about how helpless I would feel if a cop did the same thing to me. They would most likely arrest you and subsequently tow your vehicle and it would be so ****ty to see them pull up with a normal tow truck... This is another reason I don't drive the Evo if I've even had a drop of alcohol. This could also happen if you were caught street racing and would be equally ****ty

My Evo was towed in Chicago last month while I was there on business. (Didn't realize the new Snow rules kicked in at the first of the month. Even with no snow.)
The first thing I thought was I was going to have huge damage.
Luckily when I pulled into the impound there were 6 flatbeds in a row waiting to go out. I still thoroughly checked over the car before I drove it off the lot.

The sticker in and of itself holds no legal bearing. It WILL (hopefully) inform an otherwise unknowing tow truck operator that they need to use a flatbed or dollies.
I have no data to back this up, but I can only guess that towing companies aren't legally allowed to damage your vehicle when they tow it. They likely have rather large insurance policies that cover such damage that they'd rather not have to rely on that often. With several high-end vehicles (Merc/Audi) shipping tons of cars with AWD I can only imagine their owners bring some impressive lawyers to the table if damage was being done. It's probably cheaper for the tow company to spend a little more to keep a few flatbeds in the fleet than to deal with the lawsuits.
That said, I'm probably going to pick up one of those stickers. My car has only been towed once and nothing happened. Hopefully it never gets towed again, but if it does, maybe the sticker will save me grief.

Tow truck drivers dont care if you're car is a d or not. If you read some of the signs in towing areas it clearly says they are not liable and you will be towed at your expence..basically a straight fck u if u park here...
Thats why im always very careful where I park. Like I tell my gf when shes crying about me parking in the far spots instead of squeezing between all the vans at the mall. Its cheaper to take the extra 5 mins to walk from "far" than the hours/days, and thousands of dollars trying to fix my car.
