Help starting idle problems!!

Ok, so a friend of mine (another evo owner) and I put an EF3 and ported/ polished head w/s3 on my evo VIII. We are having trouble getting it started by itself without throttle. Even then if it does start, it will not stay running.

I understand that is alot of work down and a lot of room for error. Timing was checked by 3 people. We are just running out of ideas. we blocked off the EGR as well.

Mods before: After:
Pte1000cc FIC 1100cc high z
255 walbro
stock turbo EF3
stock head with hks280s to ported/polished with s3s
stock block
hks ti ehaust

Before the car was running strong besides the stock turbo going bad. Was tuned by AWD where I purchased the car last summer.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks

did you remove the injector resistor box??

Important note: These fuel injectors are high impedance and do not require the use of a resistor box. If the vehicle in which this product will be used came with a resistor box from the factory (DSM / Evo / Etc.) you will need to remove that resistor box for these to function properly

Yes I did. It was doing this with the pte 1000s as well I just put in the FICs yesterday.

Is compression and leakdown good after you reassmbled the engine?

Only other thing is to double check the grounds too.

Also, could be in the tune. I had a friend do a new set-up and they couldn't get the car to run until another remote tuner was involved.

Good luck, sorry i can't be of much help.

I will double check compression and grounds. I have a tuner that is helping but I think its something mechanical. Thanks for the response.

I'd say most likely the tune. You changed the engine ve drastically with the ported head and the s3 cams. That will throw off everything from your previous tune. You are now throwing more air into the motor putting you at different loads and areas of the map. If its not your tune when you installed the cams did you put the cam sensor plate back on correctly so the ecu is reading the proper signal? Just a couple ideas. Hope you figure it out!

Thanks for the reply. We were leaning towards it being the tune. Its just hard to get everyone that is involved with the car available being the car is at my buddies that works 72+ hours a week. Once I get over there and we keep digging I will update the progress.

Thanks again

Thats the next thing on the list. Just sucks that it will have to wait for the weekend. The valves are stuck so far down when we pulled the valve cover, the rocker arms for the two exhaust valves were sitting in the bottom on the cylinder head.

Update

Ok we finally have the head off. It took so long because the hours my buddy works. I have some pictures of the damage.

Timing never skipped and was still dead on. Only valves that are bent are cylinder 4 exhaust valves. Piston does not have any noticeable wear so we can not tell where it hit.

Sorry for the Iphone pictures

Here are the two valves

Ouch. Sorry to see that, especially after just rebuilding it. How do you think you bent them, if the timing was correct?

Not to sure. It seems like those two weren't seated correctly but whats the chance the two valves on the same cylinder would be bent caused by that if that is even possible. Either way its a learning experience. lets just hope she runs this weekend. I should be getting the head back today or tomorrow.
