Service engine light(bad afr)

Have an evo 8 with buschur racing exhaust and it hasnt been tuned. Afr idle jumps from 14.0- high 17's sometimes I just get --- I have the aem gauges. Theres also white smoke out the exhaust. Car has service engine light because it runs rich. Will just a simple tune up fix my problem?

Have you checked the engine light, If so whats the code ? White smoke can be related to burning coolant.

The afr that you mentioned, is that at idle ? It should be bouncing from 14.5 - 15.3, at 17 thats way too lean!

Yeah. On cold idle. Will a tune handle this issue?

First I would get it tuned if haven't already. If the issues still is there, I am sure the tuner would help you figure it out by what code its throwing. As for AFR during idle, sometimes it can go lean for a second or two, no big deal.

The inspector ran it and its throwing a code because its running rich. It only jumps to 17 momentarily. Its usally under 15.5. Im completely new to evos so im tryna learn all i can.

No a simple tune will not fix the problem. sounds like you have a boost leak. You need to diagnose the problem more before retuning the car.

Scan & retrieve the code. That will tell you the direct problem, most likely 02 sensor

White smoke could be from a coolant leak (ie headgasket), clogged PCV or a ****ed up catch can install/plumbing, or many other things. If you have no cat (ie test pipe) and the temps around your area are low, catless cars tend to puff white smoke for a bit longer than usual during warm up

I have no cat. Im assuming its the o2. Are any of those leaks expensive to fix?

Not expensive, just time consuming. Really lean AFR's can also puff some white smoke.. If your AFR is outta wack, its most likely your 02.. And yes a tune theoretically could fix your AFR (ie tune completely in open loop), but I doubt you want the problems associated with running open loop 24/7...

Before you purchase your front/primary 02 (which i think is the culprit of your bad AFR), you can read the voltage being supplied to the 02 via a logger, if the readings are all over the place (ie volts) then your primary 02 is bad...

Thank for the help! Im a damn noob when it comes to evo/turbo cars in general. Does what you mentioned sound portentially damaging to the car? And do any of these symptoms sound like a turbo going bad. Theres 102k on the car
