Importing and Associated Costs Question

Importing and Associated Costs Question
Hello, I am currently living in Canada and within the next two to three weeks I am looking at coming down to the US and picking up an Evo 9. I have been doing some research when I get free time but I wanted to check in and see if anyone could tell me what I am missing.
First off there is the obvious being the price of the car and the difference in our dollar. ($0.98 USD = $ 1.00 CAD as of 3/16/2013)
Second there is the cost of retrieving said vehicle or transporting it on my own, either way a second exspense.
Third I will need a customs broker to get the car across the border, and with crossing the border I will have to pay GST.
The parts that I am currently unsure on are if I either pay the state tax in which I retrieve the car from or will I pay my provincial tax on purchase, or even neither. The second part that I am unsure of is if I can insure the car before picking it up (My current idea is to fly to the car and drive it home) then throw my plates on it and be on my way, or do I have to go about it a different way?
So if anyone can confirm what I have already found for myself or help with what I am yet to find out, it would be most apreciated.

insurance depends on the provider. you can put insurance on any car you want (at least in the US) so that's definitely something you can set up in advance. usually all you need is the vin number of the car
you do not pay sales tax / whatever tax on the car when you buy it. the state you're buying it from doesn't matter, it's all about where you're registering the car (im guessing this is the same for canada)
