Replacing the engine wiring harness... sigh.
Alright chaps...
In case none of you noticed. I posted earlier saying that my coolant gauge spiked.
This was due to the ground shorting for reasons unknown, but to the best of my detective work, the shiny new cam angle sensor heat shield I installed, may have sliced into that ground wire right there.
My questions are as follows.
1. The harness that has the cam angle sensors, coolant temp gauge sensors on it etc... that is, I assume part of the main engine wiring harness?
2. Are there differences in the 6-speed vs. the 5-speed? I'm sure the Mivec vs. non-Mivec are different yes?
3. Would anyone happen to know the part number for the Evo 9 MR (Mivec) 6-speed wiring harness, know where to get one ASAP, or have one for sale?
4. Silly question I suppose, but does anyone know of a "how to" on swapping the wiring harness? I'm guessing not, but feel free to give me some tips... I'm guessing I'm just going to have to go connector by connector?
5. Also... is this even possible without pulling the motor?
Ugh... what a crappy week. 150 miles after I change the clutch. Frack!

So in my head... it just seems easier to replace the whole thing? I dunno... tell me I'm wrong? I don't know how connected the wires are the closer they get to the main plug in the firewall... realistically, I suppose it could just be whatever wires/connectors happen to be on the same loom as the coolant temp sensor, and the cam angle sensors and such?
Dunno... I hate HATE electrics. Give me some sort of logical advice here... the wiring harness is one thing I haven't really ever messed with. I always sort of view it as a constant. It's there, and you unplug as necessary, but I never really peel stuff to check it out.
I have no issues soldering though... and it'd probably be $250 cheaper. I'm just worried I won't get all of the damaged wiring?

as mentioned by "demon", can't you just repair the one wire? it's kind of silly to replace the whole harness for just one wire. however, if you do replace the harness, I would lay it out over the engine, matching up the connectors, and do them one by one. I had to do this for a 300zx TT, and it was easy. until you got to the firewall. try not to break too many clips! good luck.

Again... yes. But it isn't just one wire. It'll be everything (at least) that that ground wire is connected to. Like I know that all of the cam angle sensor wires, and the coolant gauge wires are melted together.
So how about this then... the ground that comes out right by the cam angle sensor... does anyone know which wires that grounds?
I'd also really like to know about my other questions.

I just bought an Engine harness for $170 unmolested off Ebay from a parts dealer and having it shipped straight to Buschur to replace the hack job done on mine. They had a few more up on Ebay where I got mine.....Just to be clear, this isn't an "ebay engine harness" just advertised on there.
This was a 05' GSR and I have an 05 RS so there are going to be a few wires that won't be needed on my part.
Here's another one for sale!

Just open up that section of the harness and inspect all the wiring, Worst case you have to run a new wire from the coolant gauge all the way to the plug, I don't see a reason why you should replace the whole harness? If you really want to by all means do what makes you feel comfortable, but its a little overkill don't you think? You also should have to fix any of the other wires that aren't bad either.

Alright... just as a FWIW, I have an electrical engineer who builds harnesses popping out to yutz with it just because I don't have the time, or the energy to really dig into it. I'll let you know whats up, but for reference... he didn't specify why, but he recommended against soldering it?

So you are willing to buy a replacement harness and go through the hassle of finding a mr one then spend a full day replacing it? Or isolate the problem and repair 2 bad wires by soldering and heat shield ?
Replacement
Harness $170 to $250 + labor $300 to $500
repair
Solder iron, wire and heat shield $20 + your time

Furthermore, to me, replacing the harness is a better option because of reliability. But yes, I'm familiar with your argument.
If I weren't trying to get the car to Pikes Peak, it wouldn't be an issue... but I am, and there are a MILLION things that need to be done before then. It doesn't help that my clutch took me way to long because I needed to sort out a few things while I was in there.
That's why I'm having someone else sort it out for me. My time can be better directed...
