Smile need help buying an evo

hey yall i have a few questions i was hoping i could get solved. im looking at the evo8 and like all of them im finding are at like 150k and i don't know to much about the evo i was more around dsm's when i was growing up. what is the mileage the the evos 2.0l motor start to go out? and what are some things to look out for in drive train wise since its around 150k? also this is going to be my daily driver so what kind mpg numbers would i be looking at? any info you guys can give to help me with my shopping would be great.

There isbt neceassarily a mileage the 4g motor will go out at. The biggest thing is how it was treated. Any motor will take a crap if it was treated like ****. On these the timing belt is changed every 60k so if your looking at one around 150k it should been changed twice. Personally over 100k I'd look right around 120k and make sure the timibg belt was just changed. There are many I have found around that mileage for btwn 10 and 13k clean title. Check for service and maintenance records. Idk about you but when I talk to someone about the car I'm buying from them and they can actually tell me about the parts and the tune etc etc its a big thing for me. I'd rather have someone exolain their afrs at wot and idle then just tell me "the tune is good" average mpg will vary on your driving style, stay out of boost and I'd say 22mpg and maybe 26on the highway because the stock turbo spools so early. Keep in mind this is a performance car if you wabt 30mpg this isn't it haha but there's always modifications and tunes that can squeeze some exyra mpgs

are you looking at a 2003/2004 Evo 8 or a 2005 Evo 8?! If it's a 2005 then make sure the ACD has been properly maintained. The 2003/2004 Evo 8's never came with the ACD so that's one less thing to worry about in regards to those years. But no matter what year you look into, whether it be a 2003-2005 Evo 8 or a 2006 Evo 9, make sure the entire drivetrain has also been properly maintained. Like rjfg said it isn't so much the mileage, its how the mileage has been put on. A 150,000 mile daily driven 4G63 will be in better shape than a 15,000 mile track driven 4G63. The Evo's drivetrain is so complex and there are so many elements that make it what it is. For example it has the motor, the transmission, the transfer case, a front diff, middle diff, and a rear diff. all of those pieces have to work together in perfect harmony for the Evo to be maximized to its fullest potential. So to answer your question I would make sure the motor has been properly taken care of as well as every other part mentioned. I hope this helped.

150k, if you get it rebuild it first before modding.

Any high mileage vehicle will require some TLC as well as an eraser to remove any of the dumb things previous owners have done to their cars. At that age, you would be hard pressed to find one that hasn't been molested, but I'm sure they are out there. Good luck, also, the Evo doesn't have a "middle differential."

The one I'm looking at already has the up grades I want to do like a CAI and a IC and a BOV other than that nothing that I would change but if I would put at bigger turbo on it I would rebuild it just so I know it will handle it.

How big of a turbo are you looking to put on?! Aside from the fact that the Evo 8 you're looking at has 150k miles on it, the stock bottom end of an Evo can withstand over 500whp with out any major issues. It just takes a good tuner to properly distribute the torque over the power band. Some Evo's have broken into the 600's with a stock bottom end. So before you buy this Evo, have it looked at and do a compression test.

^^^that x1000. Its all how it was driven and maintained. Also, if it has a BOV, is it recirculated or vent to atmosphere? If its vent to atmosphere and still has a MAF (not speed density tuned) that could possibly cause some issues
