Pulling motor

Now I need to do the T-belt and clutch on my car and was wondering if I could just pull the motor alone and not with the trans? Without having a lift and being able to drop it all out the bottom like I do cars at work I would rather just pull the engine alone if its possible.

Yes you can pull the engine out from the top. You will need a engine hoist to lift it out. Just don't forget to undo the tob. But if you do this at work all you should know it will come out the top.

the transfer case is in the way of one bolt for the block. So you have to remove the transfer case. The next issue is moving the block enough to the pass side to clear the bell housing and clutch assembly. Theres alot more room for the transmission to slide to the drivers than the block, from my experience anyhow. I left the transmission esentially in the engine bay, although it was unbolted and on a tranny jack, just so I could slide it to get the engine out from underneath. Granted, I had the head off so I was able to slide it underneath the car which was on jackstands.

The short answer is yes, you can pull the motor out by itself, but I dont know if it could be done with the transmission completely mounted in the car. That would seem like it would be harder than to just undo the two motor mounts supporting it imo.

It may be possible but probably not worth the effort. As TommiM said you're going to have to unbolt the trans mounts anyway so just go ahead and pull them both. I pulled the t-case/trans out last weekend and am now going to pull the motor so I can work on it while the trans/t-case are getting built. I will be putting the engine/trans in as a unit as I'm sure it will be easier that way.

Save yourself the headache and just pull them both together. Trust me it will be easier. In the end it will make getting them back together alot easier with them both out of the car as well.

why would you pull the motor to do a clutch and timing belt?

You don't need to pull the motor to do T-Belt and Clutch, do the clutch first by unbolting it from engine and tcase and dropping it down, do your clutch and put it back on.

Then undo the engine mount on the passenger side and on the bottom, slide the jack under the engine (oil pan) put some padding not to damage the oil pan (piece of wood?) and use that to lift that side of the engine up and down, this will give you access to the pulleys, water pump etc. don't add more work for yourself by pulling the engine.

Well I rather pull it all out the top than drop a trans on the ground on my back then have to do a timing belt job with very little room when I can just pull the engine trans and do it all with as much room as I want

The few people I've talked to around here said just to pull it all of I have to do both of them. It doesn't really matter what way I do it I have like a month to finish it.

I did Engine + Tranny out the top many times, if you want to go this route, get the engine leveler and it'll come in and out of the bay through the top with Intake Manifold and Alternator attached, but you're just adding more work for yourself, there's no need to do that unless you're doing this because you have abundance of time to waste

Pulling the Engine:
1) Unhooking the Harness (some places are hard to reach especially by the firewall), stock rails require you to pull it in order to unhook injector harness.
2) Easier to do with 2 people, especially when dropping it in and aligning both sides + t-case or it may get lodged in lower the engine
3) You are basically purging all the fluids (t-case gear, tranny, radiator and engine)
4) Unhooking the exhaust manifold and Turbo
5) Removing radiator and all vac lines + HVAC
* Remember you have to put that all back in too, new oil drain to oil pan gasket, possible missing bolts and screws as it always happens when undoing it all :P

Not Pulling the Engine:
1) Drain Tranny Fluid only and maybe Gear?
2) Undoing passenger side mount

Choose your poison, but I would take the latter one.

I pull engines weekly at the body shop I work at so I figured pulling it would be easier for me just never done an Evo before. . And still have to drain all of those fluids as I'm doing waterpump and oil change anyways.
