Help! EVO problems

Hey guys. I have moved over seas and I am in a bit of a mess at the moment. because my car was at the auto electrician when I left because the car wasnt starting. its been months and he still cant fix it. He has actually had it since September last year!!

I have a Evo 1. Rebuilt gearbox. rebuilt engine, 15,000km on the rebuild. 420hp. car is pretty rough but goes mean, well when it runs. he emailed me and said he still cant get it working he will have to put a new computer in because he still thinks its the computer thats gone. even though he has sent it to haltech in aus three times already. He messaged me before saying. Another option is I could wipe my bill and what I owe for sending it to aus and buy it off you and then flick it off once I have a new computer. I think the second option sounds better because it will be a huge weight off my shoulders. If it was running I could of sold it for 11, but at the moment it has no rego, no warrent, and will need a new computer.

Not sure what the question is. However, we need more information to help you.
Is there spark?
Is there fuel?
Why does the tech think its the ECU?
Did the car just stop starting one day or did it slowly form an issue starting over time?

The thing is I do not know what the problem is. I drove it to work one day, then after work it wouldnt start. Then I called my friend to jump start me because I though that battery was dead and then it worked. Then I drove it home and the next morning it wouldn't start. He has checked all the wiring, battery, ran a temp cable to the boot incase it was the cable running from the battery in the boot, and everything that I could think of. Even though he has sent the Haltech ECU to aus twice it still isnt running. But he still thinks the computer has a problem even though Haltech say its fine. But like I said it is still not running. He has had it for about six months and still can't find a fault. He is the best around where I am from. Heaps of people I know have taken their cars into him.

He says its definitely the ecu. I was talking to the guy who tuned my car and he said thats the problem with the Haltech ecu's they are a bit out dated and the diognostics arent as indepth as the modern ecu's. So what the auto electrician has said he will wipe the bill that I owe him which is 1600, and buy it as it is. No wof, No rego, wipe the bill I owe him and give me 4 grand. because if I keep it I will have to fork out another 4+ grand for a new ECU and installing it etc, tune, so that would being about 9 grand all up. So, I am at a bit of a loss but seems like the best option for me since I don't live in NZ now.

Sorry for rambling on. What are your thoughts on this?

$4000 for an ECU and tune???? Something seems off there. There are too many variables for anyone online to diagnose this issue without knowing my previously asked questions. I'd ask the same to your guy and see what he says. It might be beneficial to post this on dsmtuners since its an evo 1 (assuming based on your sig).

Could it be possible the guy really wants the car and is just feeding you a line? I don't want to throw anyone under the bus, and I'm sure the guy you're taking it too is a stand up guy. It seems odd that he would want to buy the car knowing he hasn't been able to get it to start for the last 6 months....

Maybe there's more to the story..?

Also, check with the guys over at www.evo123.net. There is quite a few experts on that site that can probably help narrow down what the cause could be. I owned a few early evos, but I always had a socketed ECU with ECMLink so I have no experience with the Haltech.

I've had a similar problem to this on my lancer GSR. Mine wouldn't start and had to get someone to jump start it for me as I winded it flat. It started and went fine till the next day it wouldn't start again. I have a 500hp wlabro fuel pump & link G4 ECU on it, which I thought was either one of them was playing up. But all of that was fine and in working order. The battery was good, nothing wrong at all. So after going mad about the problem, I finally figured it out why it wasn't firing up. It had something to do with the immobiliser on the alarm. So took that all out and found it the alarm box that it was full of moisture. CRC all in it and cleaned it chucked it all back together and she fired up on the first turn. Haven't had any problems with it since.
