Gearbox noise

Hi, I can hear my evo5 has a noise from the gearbox when I'm driving, the noise is like a bearing in the gearbox spinning around. Specially in 2nd and 3rd gear at around 2k-3k rmp, you can hear the noise very clearly. But if I step the clutch down or when it's on natural the noise disappear so I found it very weird. Is it something wrong with the bearing? Do I need to rebuilt my gearbox? Does anyone knows how much would cost for rebuilt a evo5 gearbox?

Do you have a stock clutch? You are most likely experiencing noise from the throwout bearing, my TOB has made noise for over 5,000 miles. I haven't experienced any problems because of it. My advice would be just replace it when it comes time for a new clutch unless you are experiencing lockout issues or any problems shifting.

Yeah, I have a stock clutch, and the shifting is alright, not so bad and not so smooth. I'm just worrying about the noise. Don't want to spend money on wrong things so I ask before I take it to the garage.

AS already stated If it only makes the noise when the clutch is not depressed there is a good chance it is the Throw Out Bearing. Yes, it will be fine to drive. Just get some type of game plan to put a new clutch and bearing in. You can always drain the gear oil to see if it has metal flakes in it if you think your trans has a bad bearing.

I had alot of stuff wrong with my transmission last year.
Whining, bearing noise off clutch and a different noise on clutch, a bad grind into 5th, and even metal shavings in the fluid.
Changing the fluid helped a little, but when i saw the metal, I knew something needed to be done.
Since I was already past due for my 120K service, I decided to take it to Evolution Dynamics, and have them do the service and have the transmission done as well.
They sent it to Chad Hayes, and he determined that the last person who rebuilt the transmission installed the shift sleeves upside down. (I'm the 3rd or 4th owner)
Chad did alot of work for a pretty understandable price.
Had to replace gear 1,2,4,5 and R, along with the output shaft.
I opted for a new 4.11 FD gear, just because I wanted one which cost me 800.
I think all together it cost around $3000 including the fd.
Then when Evodynamics got it back (in under a month) they installed a new clutch and throw out bearing. Maybe $1000 (can't remember atm)
Trans is WORLDS different now. Butter smooth shifts, and little to no noise after break in.
Highly recommend Chad Hayes at Hayes Racing Transmission.
Prolly could have done this myself on the cheap, but it'd take me twice as long without shop lifts etc, so I figured I'd give 'em a try and am very satisfied with the result.

and the moment I post this I realize you said evo 5 and you're in new zealand.
Sorry, disregard me

Cheers mate, it's only making the noise when the clutch is not depressed.
