This is the general rule for owning a sports car. Basically "you have to pay to play", but you can save yourself some serious headaches by keeping up on the suggested maintenance and replacing wear items by their known expiration times.

Routine maintenance can be expensive, and I think a lot of people buy them without considering that, and they end up skipping important services, and then they have a paperweight. Just like any car.

Oh and mitsubishi's customer service is non-existent, so people who rely on their dealership for service are screwed often times.

Honestly the first word that came in my mind when I read your title was: reliable.

I came from a SRT-4, heard the same d@mn thing, the ct9a is absolutely a great platform, best d@mn platform to quinch my thirst for point and squirt power. Its been 5 yrs., I daily my Evo 8 everyday since purchase in 09' at 365whp. I have this forum to thank -as already mentioned stay on maintenance, when evom members give a recurring advice do research and take their advice. I learned from suspension setup. Power mods the same. Before your purchase always do leak down test, boost leak test and check for any fluids in or around engine. Try at least 1 or 2 autocrossing event during your ownership. And stay away from hellaflush and stance culture.

My evo is awesome. Although mine is still stock, I take really good care of it, and don't daily it...that being said I wouldn't hesitate to flog it like any other car if I had to. I'd just expect more frequent routine maintenance.
