Buying a high mileage evo

hello everyone, I am new here and I am planning on buying an evo soon and I have found one for sale has slit mods, its an 03 with 124k miles for 11k. Im just worried about high miles or anything else I should look for when I go look for it.

Any help would be helpful

Thanks

By dealer specs that is a low mileage car. They allow 15k a year as normal driving. So 124K is in line with normal driving.

That being said being an Evo if you don't know what you are doing find someone who does and take them with you. I car with that kind of miles could go either way. Is it private party or a dealer? Get a car fax at least that will let you know if it has been wrecked.

Take it for a drive and listen for any weird noises, check that it shifts properly no grinds between shifts. Listen to the the engine there should be no strange noises.

There is a starter list for you. Good luck with your purchase.

A higher mileage evo will still be very reliable, but it all depends on how it was taken care of. These cars will last a very long time if they are cared for properly.

Don't be a jerk.

---

I have a 2003 with 148K miles and it's going strong. I recently did maintenance on the suspension but that's easy to pick up in a test drive, my struts were knocking. I also did both front wheel bearings (also something you'd hear). The front mount inter cooler on my car was due to be replaced, it was pretty beat up. You can look under the front of the car and determine if the car was beat to hell from riding too low or off-roading pretty easily. My synchros had to be replaced (grinding while shifting) once but that had more to do with my aggressive immature shifting then anything else, if you take it easy, parts on an Evo can last a very long time.

$11K sounds like the right price as long as it has a clean title. If I was in the market to buy an Evo, the less mods it had the better. Unless you FOR SURE know the car was tuned properly after each mod or bolt-on. It's tough to see some of the internal damage driving a car without a proper tune can cause. There are tuner shops everywhere, I'd find one nearby and bring the car over, maybe pay for an hour and they can give it a good look. Plus, if you're buying an Evo, they should be happy to meet you

Sorry about the jerk comment. I know it's covered a lot, just about every evo-related topic is here, but when you jump on a forum it can be frustrating when the answer you get is "Search."

Reminds me of good ol' Let me Google that for you.

lol, just clicked my own Google link and found this, good tips.

check for high rpm grinding while shifting the trans. if so you are in for at least 1500 on top of the labor to install.

i bought my evo 9 with 130k on it. runs strong no grinds no whine, nothing...but first thing i did was all the maint timing belt, water pump and i flushed every fluid and i mean every fluid from power steering all the way to differential, just do all the maint and you will have a reliable car

just be ready to replace things when they break, and things will break no matter what mileage you have on your evo

whaaaaat? I've had my Evo 8 for 10 years now and all I've had to do is maintenance. Not all Evos break on a regular basis.
