Spark plugs

So every x amount of mileage I put on the evo I notice a stutter problem when I want to go WOT. I try to keep up with maintenance and swap out sparks when I do my oil changes from 3500-4000. From previous research/browsing, I saw that others recommend swapping it out every oil change as well. This is a pretty annoying added cost.

Can anyone else confirm that they experience issues with stutter after X amount of mileage nearing oil change? The sparks don't look too bad but you notice some black near the electrode/tip of the plug.

I want to make sure it's not a symptom of needing a new tune. The prior owner got it done by jestr tuning and I'd probably go with Ivey because of proximity. Any other recommended tuners in NNJ?

Also, any recommendation at what spark plug gap I should be running at? I have hks dli ignition system. It is currently gapped at .030 and don't have problems when I initially change. WOT all day long until I think enough mileage has been put on it and notice the stutter again.

What plugs are you using? Every other oil change seems way too soon for plugs. I just swapped mine out for the 1st time in about 4-5 years/20k miles.

Are you running copper plugs or iridium? Im running copper plugs and swap them out every oil change. Its only about $2 a plug and really easy to do when you have a cop kit.

I'm using iridium plugs.

If he has a 9, the oem recommended plugs are the iridium type. That's definitely a big added cost to every other oil change if your using iridium plugs. Gap should be set from .020 - .024

That's a lot of gap. I'd go with 21-22 and see what's up.

For normal driving you shouldn't need to change them (stock ones.... copper is another story) any sooner than 15k at earliest. Any sooner and there is something wrong, and it isn't the plug.

You run iridium plugs in the IX I'm assuming. 3k is way to early. Copper plugs that most folks run in their VIII's on the other hand should be changed frequently.

I strongly reccomend you don't bring your car anywhere that I am aware of in NJ for tuning. E-Tune or take a small road trip. You'll thank yourself later

I swapped over to a evo viii, not by choice. I am running iridium ngk bpr8es. I will try lowering the gap but I want to get more confirmation.

I see people going from .022 to stock .025-.028 then others going with 0.29~ higher because of better mpg etc.

Others stating .022 is way too low. Too many threads with mixed opinions/advice.

Thanks for the recommendation. I forgot about Espec. I wanted to go to them when I swapped over to a bbk setup but doesn't look like I'll be doing many mods/upgrades anytime soon.

Ivey Tune is 30 mins away from you down in Linden. I had a few friends go to him years ago and their cars are still running strong.

BRP8ES are copper plugs. The BPREIX would be the iridium counterpart. You shouldnt need to change them nearly as often.

I've run both as well as the non protruding tip versions of each BR8ES and BR8EIX. My car prefers copper non protruding tip plugs.

I've always gapped all to .026

Ive ran both as well. My evo also prefers the BR8ES, and so does my wallet

You two, gsrboi and tommim, are avid posters and always saw knowledgeable posts so I'll stick with your recommendations.

And your right it was copper not iridium.

Thanks guys!!

yeah the br8es or br7es or bpr8es or bpr7es are good to change out every oil change and you're not the only one doing so. the BPR is the protruding ones, BR is a little more recessed (shorter) of the two, and the 8's are a step colder than the 7s. plugs are like 2 bucks each so if that is hurting your wallet (which i don't think it is) then you shouldn't be in the evo game
