Use the correct size tap, if possible.
If you can't find the right size tap, get some grade 10.9 bolts (the metric equivalent of grade 8), and some cutting oil. In a pinch, this can be as effective as a tap for chasing threads.
Example: Inexpensive Tap Kit

what you want is a thread chaser, not a tap. A Tap might damage threads.

Found (copied & pasted from this thread post #2 - O2 Housing Hardware) on another thread someone looking for hardware for their new o2 housing.
______
The sizes are 10mm x 1.25mm pitch. Bolts are 25mm long
Here are the PNs of all the official fasteners..
Bolt - MD062961
Nut - MD050073
Stud - MR224441
Washer - MD132933
You can order whatever combo you want. You need 2 studs minimum, and 3 bolts,
but you do get all 5 locations as studs, then get the nuts and washers.
Order from www.mitsubishiparts.net if you want the "real" parts
Or, if your turbo has the studs, and they are in good shape, then go to Home Depot, NAPA, etc.,
and buy the bolts, nuts, washers. You want hardened - grade 8.8 fasteners

Usa a tap with the same thread and you will be fine. The tap will only remove material in front of the cutting blade, ie rust.
I've done it many times to clean out threads in most of my cars...no issues whatsoever.
Otherwise talk to an actual machinist and see what they recommend yo use.

the problem with taps is that they can undercut the original threads, which can lead to a whole host of problems. Use the right tool for the right job. This is the whole reason thread chasers exist.

Fastenel or ace hardware should work.
