Considering Selling - Talk me in - Talk me out
I have an 05 EVO VIII with 97K miles. Only owner. Excellently maintained. I am considering selling. I am looking for some push in either direction. Advice? Opinions?

I was considering selling my evo because it's about to be paid off, but I realized I would be sad because to me there is nothing like an evo. The only way I would sell my evo is if I were to get a GT-R. Plus I would be pretty pissed if I was driving around in my new car and a evo smokes me. I would be like I used have one of those

For me the evo is a no sale vehicle. Name me another car that can do EVERYTHING the evo does? Not some of what it does, but literally everything. The only one is the STI and the evo is beyond it. There's always something you'll miss. I would like another car also but the evo stays.

If you're considering selling it just because you're bored then you should sell it (YOU DON"T DESERVE IT)lol.
Evo's are amazing cars, there is no other car that I want to own instead of it. I love the feeling, I've never been in a more exciting car.

Were all Evo enthusiasts here, but in the end its your car. If you don't want it anymore then sell it. If you truly loved the car it wouldn't be on your mind at all to want to sell it. I could never sell my evo. If I wanted another car I will save up for it but I couldn't part with this evo.

Still Love It
I still love the car. It's been my daily driver for 9 years now. Problem is money is a bit tight. I am on the original clutch. I have a rust spot on my rear quarter. And my ACD pump lights flickered on and off a couple of times. And tires of course will be needed. That's a lot of maintenance for me right now. I have been babying the car just to get by lately and that's no fun. On the good side. Timing belt has less than 20K miles on it. Pads and rotors have less than 10K miles on them. If I sell it, I feel like I am selling the best car I might ever own. I know I can't replace it with anything fun. So, practically, I should sell it. Emotionally, I should keep it. Question for me, do I go with my practical side or my emotional side?

For sure if you cannot afford to maintain the car life comes first. I've seen this happen quite often over the years with these cars.
Sure folks can afford the initial price point but they cannot really afford the car. There is no point of owning this car where you don't have to have a couple grand away for the what ifs. ie clutch, trans, TC, rust spot etc...

I don't think there's another car that has the same amount of problems an Evo has.
I'm in the same boat right now, I think I'm leaning towards selling for a more luxury oriented car because of everyday work traffic. The Evo is great mine doesn't have problems like the OP. It's just a waste of an Evo sitting in traffic everyday :-(

If money is tight right now, the real question is whether or not you think things will get a bit better money-wise down the road. I had a similar situation a while ago... I had a Honda S2000, lost my job, and couldn't really afford it. So, I bought a Jetta (non-turbo, something like 90 horsepower...). It had a really nice interior, good stereo, etc. But... a year later when I landed a good job, I really started hating the Jetta. I ended up trading in the Jetta for my Evo (this was back in '06), and the Jetta was only about 2 years old. So looking at the big picture, I lost a lot of money on depreciation (both on the S2000 and the Jetta).
Long story short - if you think things might be a bit better in the next year, hunker down, eat Top Ramen (save $$$), build up a "cash cushion", and wait it out.
But... if things don't look like they'll change then I agree with the other posters here -- it's no fun being "car poor."
Good luck!

Yup. Still original clutch. I have an awesome 15 mile commute to work on twisty back roads. I have had a ton of fun on my commutes, but I have never abused the clutch. There are no mods on the car, so no extra torque to wear out the clutch. I have been good to the car and it has been good to me. Problem is, teacher salaries in NJ have been going down for years and will continue to decline for at least 4 more years. My 2 kids are getting older and more expensive. Maybe, I could sell them instead of the car

The rust spot wont effect driveability, you can take care of that eventually. That isn't a safety item. ACD lights flickering can be a number of issues, maybe just needs to be bled. Either way, just make sure the fluid is filled to the proper level. If the acd pump goes out, again you will be ok to drive like that until you can fix it. What size tires you need, just curious. It really just seems like you mostly just need tires, no need to sell the car just for that. Fix the rest of the stuff when things look better. The evo will be fine until then.

Sorry man. Teachers are like the new punching bags nowaday. Tenure fights are getting ugly. As for the car. Sell it if you can't keep up with the maintenance. But if you could make "life style" changes to afford to keep it then do that. Family first though. :}
