You probably already know this but you will never get what your car is worth by trading it in.

In addition to that Carmax will lowball the hell out of you.

Clean it up and sale it yourself. imho

As long as you disclose any and all issues with the new buyer, there should be no problem. It will take a little longer to sell privately, but you will get more out of the car as opposed to trading it in.

In some respects I'd rather know up front the clutch needs replacing rather than get the car and 2 months later bam it goes out. At least then if I got the car for the right price I could use the savings to get a clutch and install and be on my merry way.

I'd probably replace the clutch, then take the car to a prof. detailer to see what can be done about the paint. If not you'll have to paint it. Having sold cars that need work, versus selling cars after I did the nec. repairs-I always got a lot more for the cars with all the work done.

Most people don't like buying a car and then have to work/pay someone to work on it-they want turnkey fun.

I'd probably put out a "feeler" ad to see if there is interest in the car, as-is. I'd try that before dumping a couple extra grand into the car.

Look at KBB.org to figure out the price range of your car. If you can, detail it yourself or have it professionally done. Go ahead and take it to carmax. See what price they offer you. If it's low, walk away and sell it yourself.

If it needs work people are going to lowball you. If your ok with that then just sell it as is.

It pays to stay up on the maintenance and body paint work for times like this. Kind of a shame to spend time and money to then just sell it and maybe not break even. Ultimately it's your call but unless the car is a queen you have to put some time into it cleaning etc for sale or expect the low offers.

I worked at carmax. They'll offer wholesale value. I had people crumple up the offer sheets and drop them on the floor before. The only thing they're selling is convenience and you pay a premium for that.

lol, since everyone else is bashing carmax, yes stay away from them, they will not give you what you want, your better off posting the evo for sale here and selling to another fellow evo enthusiast, if you try trade in, carmax or any dealership for that matter, they're not going to care about the type of car it is, all they care about is giving you the least amount for it possible and getting the most out of you for the new car you buy, sell it yourself man, the demand is out there, you shouldn't have a problem, the demand is out there for these cars and clutch and new paint job isn't going to be a deal breaker, the right person will come along and buy it, guarantee it
