Military + Evo's = Questions
#32
No doubt...WRXs can be had for realtivly cheap and can be made to run with an EVO for a couple grand. I've see 02 REXs' goin for less than 20k, with low miles to boot.
I'm not tryin to discourage from an EVO just because your young either. I just speak from experience. You know maybe you could afford the payment, but insurance on top of that plus the ****ty gas mileage=no way you could afford it. Unless you put at least 10k down or had an extra 700 bucks a month comin in on top of your AF pay.

If you can find a used Evo in the low 20's and get a co-signer, then ok. If not, just wait.
I've been in 18 years and just now I'm able to aford it.
You will never get rich in the military, O or E (or warrant).
The side bennys are cool though! Travel, medical, dental, killing losers, etc...

Thanks
Wow,
I really didn't expect this kind of response. I'm happy to see all these people that are in the Military and are able to give me good, solid advice. I think I will heed your warnings and just opt for the SRT-4, or maybe pick up a used 3rd gen RX-7 from LA Motorcars (seems to be a great place to find RX-7's).
Just some information to throw around: I already know my job, I'm going to be a Bomber Avionics Systems Apprentice (fixing radar etc on B-1 bombers and maybe B-2's depending how lucky I am)
But what I'll plan on doing is getting the SRT-4 or RX-7 and if I stay in for a bit longer maybe trading that in on an Evo.
Once again, thanks for your help guys, and if the mods are reading this, maybe you could make a forum for military-members only? I think that'd be a cool way to see what's going on with everyone.
Thanks again!

Be leary of RX-7's. They are very prone to overheating and blowing apex seals. Personally I wouldn't buy a used one unless I planned to strip the engine and rebuild it completely.
And welcome to the 2A5X3 AFSC....I'm Integrated Avionics/Instruments and Flight Controls.

i agree on the rx-7 thing..... look for a used wrx.... my wife bought her wrx new in 03 and her payments are 306 a month..... not bad but we put a nice chunk a change down. you can find a good used wrx for about 17-18k.
yea just wait for the EVO....like i said i been in 14 years..no kids and my wife works and makes her own car payment.... my first car was a CRX.... then a Integra... it took me a while to get to EVO status but you gotta crawl before you walk. trust me listen the guys who posted..... we either seen or been in the situation.

Yeah man, just wait until you are stable enough to afford the Evo.
I made the mistake, and from now on, I would much rather drive a POS for several years before my finances are set.
Only bad thing is that women don't notice me in a POS as they did in the Evo
And stay away from Rx7's!!! They're great cars but for your age, you don't want to spend all of your hard-earned money fixing it, do you?

E-2. AF. living in AWESOME dorms.
ill tell you now bro. you wont be able to afford it. i make about 630 a paycheck, WITH cola..because of the higher cost of living in alaska. boo. do you think you could afford a 600 dollar car payment ON TOP of 3 or 4 hundred dollar insurance. because you will be 18 right? so...youll have what? 20 dollars to spend a month? what about cable tv, internet, or a phone? how about gas? bills stack up man, i know. not that im over my head, im doing quite well..but i hate bills. im sure like everyone else. luckily i had my ES lancer before i came in, but i got ripped off..so my car payment is EVO-like. $425 per month. i still put away $75 a check.
Like everyone else i saying, be smart. im living comfortably in my dorm now with cable and all that.
you never said when you were leaving for basic. but good luck. i went in november 03-january 04. spent thanksgiving, christmas & new years @ lackland. lol. it sucked. tech school sucked too. theyre both more stressful then i ever imagined. if you got any more questions shoot me an IM. izzomizzo16.
to all the other military guys who posted, you guys are great. going through basic you come to the conclusion that every staff & tech is a dick. lol. hey! every staff & tech on base is yelling @ you. lol, but thats over for me. but now that im @ my first base, you guys actually do have hearts. thanks! - ian

Hehe...the dorms are much better now than when I first came in. I got to experience a little of the 1+1 dorms before they made me move off base. Can't complain too much other than the size of the room. But 02izzel has it correct, trying to live life and make high payments with high insurance is not easy or fun. It's nice to be able to bring a girl back to your room and actually have a t.v. to watch movies on, or a stereo to listen to music. I got all of that taken care of before I bought a nice car and it worked pretty well for me.
As for Basic and Tech School, it's all cake walk. Just keep your wits about you and try not to screw up. It's easier than it seems so you shouldn't have any problems getting through if you aren't a dumbass!
Hehe...I'm a Staff and tested for Tech this year. It's only the guys at training bases that are like that cause they know you are new and like to F- with you!

I owned a 93 RX-7 R1. Great car. STAY AWAY! Do not buy a used one unless you plan to immediately rebuild the engine and install some 3mm apex seals. I would upgrade the radiator too while I was at it.
Take half your monthly paycheck and put it in some mutual funds. Spend the other half a booze and cheap women (or whatever the A/F equivalent is). When you get out in a few years you will have enough money stored up to make a decent down payment on your dream car and cover the costs of running it for a while.
Good luck with your career in the Air Force. You definately made a good decision.

I'm a E-4 for me a Evo would be tought to swing with out a nice down payment. You wont have any time to buy a car in basic, and depending on your Tech School you wont have time there either. I suggest waiting till your at your first duty station, buying a lil used civic an putting around in it for a year or two, save then buy what you want. You also gotta think about insurance. You may be able to afford the car payment but being young driving a "sportscar" you have a chance of paying more in insurance than your actual car payment.

whats up man, Im an E-4 in the USAF and I'm also about to buy an evo when I get back to the states(al udeid sucks) anyway a friend of mine did the same thing, he was 18 and used his bonus as a down payment but still had to have his 1ST shirt co-sign for the loan. If you live in the dorms you wont have any money left between car payment and insurance so I'd wait until I moved off base and started collecting BAH. you can always find a cheaper used one though. good luck man
