Military + Evo's = Questions
#46
You are a member of the U.S. military. You are sworn to defend this great country and the rule of law. The only reason to buy an EVO is because you intend to violate your state's ridiculously low speed limits. Shame on you !!! Get a Toyota Prius, and salute the flag.

I say wait! Try to get transferred to Japan and then buy an used Skyline there. Once you get back to the US, the air force will let you take your car with you, and you can trade that in for an EVO X + cash if you want.

Well, to bring this back from the dead, I ended up not buying an Evo right off the bat. Instead, I bought a 1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD and built it up to about 300hp. I ended up selling that because I wanted something that looked a little more modern, and bought a 98 Eclipse GSX.
Shortly after I purchased the Eclipse, I went overseas to Guam and did a lot of thinking. The main thing that was on my mind was reliability of the DSM. Sure, I could make it have 400whp, but how often would it break? How much would maintenance cost? And how practical of a car would it be?
So, a few weeks after I got back to the states, I noticed that one of the dealerships here in town had a silver 03 Evo for sale. I talked with them and ended up getting it for 22,000 out the door. A little expensive, but it evened out to what it would have cost to have one shipped here.
Thanks for all your input, everyone!

I used to serve in the military and if you're 18 i'm pretty sure you're going in as an enlisted....I jsut have one question for you
is your military paycheck going to be your only source of income?
If you answer "NO" that's a good sign.
If you answer "YES" then EVO is one of the worst vehicle you could ever get looking at from a financial standpoint.
Evos:
1. One of the highest vehicles to insure. If you 18 then I estimate your 6months to be at least $1000 and please don't choose USAA.
2. High maintenance vehicle. When its time to replace your tires you need to fork out at least $1000 out of door price for all of them just balancing, installations, plugs, etc.
3. Speeding ticket collector.
4. Cops target.
5. Everything else.
I got out of the service back in 2004 and now I have a better job making 3 times what i was making back in the service, and still I can't make enough dough to all all my bills
I rest my case
EDIT: Oh i guess my response was too late. Good luck then

I'm not going to rehash what everyone else said, but kid...don't do it.
Unless you want to do nothing but eat at the chow hall and pay for gas. You won't have any money for anything else. E-1's only make about $1000/month and you can count on about $600-700 of that as a carpayment and insurance. And that's being generous.
oops I did the same thing. good luck/.

22k isn't bad. Like Carloverx said, you would have paid that back then on the SRT4.
If you would have joined the Marines, you would have been able to walk to the Stealership, kick the door in, take the Evo for 15k with free services for life, And got a free night with the salesmans daughter!
Just kidding man, my little brother is in the Air Force (I'm a Jar Head) so we always give each other a hard time.
BTW, congrats on the purchase.
