What to do about intake that previous owner had on?

I'm getting ready to do some mods and also do a tune. Below is the set up the previous owner had and I was wondering which path I should go. My current plans are not going over 400HP or upgrading the stock turbo, however, that may change in the near future so I'd like to over-compensate to have that option.

I'm not sure if I should order the stock air box and setup, and put in a K&N drop in or if I should go with an HKS RSR intake? If I go with the stock set up, what all parts do I need to order (part #'s would be nice)?

There's a lot of coal trucks where I live, so I'm a little hesitant on the HKS intake but I use to have one similar to it on my GSX and I loved it but I'm a little more over-protective with my Evo.

And if I go with the HKS, should I do just the intake or should I get an air box or a heat shield to go with it?

OR

Is the setup on it okay now?--I assume it's not

The mods I am for sure will be doing with the tune:
3" TBE exhaust
Grimmspeed 3-port EBC
ETS V2 LICP

With some possible others.

your intake is fine for a nice 300ish dynojet whp daily.

to add:

-walbro fuel pump
-change hose clamps to t-bolt type
-do a boost leak test
-throttle body seals to high psi ones (if leak test shows leaks there which will probably show)
-afr gauge(nice to have)
-boost gauge(nice to have)
-fresh oil change
-fresh spark plugs
-good tank of gas

who is tuning your car?

Will be changing to t-bolt clamps. Will also be getting boost gauge, oil pressure gauge, afr gauge. Already have fresh spark plugs and wires ready to install, oil change was done few days ago.

Also have brand new brakes + rotors, brand new struts, timing belt changed, new ACT stage 1 clutch, water pump, new Michelin PSS, fresh fluids, and have looked the car over from bottom to top and top to bottom, along with several other people.

Only thing else I need done is an oil line changed which I already have, just need to install. I've been sure to get all the maintenance done and up to date before I started doing any mods at all (all maintenance repairs have been OEM).

I plan on taking it to TPG tuning in PA since they are the closest to me and have heard good things.

The problem I don't like about the intake now is the filter is oiled and the oil gets into the intake pipes and it needs replaced anyways as it's getting rather old and not looking too good. I was hoping to switch to a dry filter and would prefer to throw something in there that is good since I am getting it tuned and replacing the filter anyways, so I was thinking a whole intake kit.

Edit: I won't be doing a walbro this wave of mods as I've been told it's unnecessary but will be getting one for the next wave. I've been told and read that the OEM is fine for stock FIC and turbo. Please tell me if this is wrong. And also has been tested for boost leaks and there were none, as the car is bone stock with the exception of the intake, so everything is sealed nice and tight with no leaks.

who told you it isnt needed? true you may not need it but it is a cheap insurance you have enough fuel. i am running a stock turbo also. if you plan on running higher boost than stock levels, you need it. plus it is just a little over $100 bucks and 20 mins to change out. as far as your filter most filters are oiled, the oil issue isnt from the filter but from your crank case. people usually run a catch can set up to help this but an oiled filter is not going to pour oil into your intake but if you want a new one, the perrin (like i have) is nice or most of my buddies run an ETS intake. so...

get a walbro 255 installed and an intake.

The "Official" Evo modding for dummies, many threads I've read through, and a local Evo/DSM shop have said it isn't needed. I won't be going past 350whp which is what is recommended to upgrade the fuel pump with a lot of people saying it's good beyond 350whp.

I've bought and installed Walbro's before so I know how much they cost and how easy they are to change but if it's not necessary, I'm not sure why I'd get it now? I'd rather put that towards something I do need now. I was wondering about either ordering the stock air box + K&N drop in, keeping it how it is now with a different filter, or getting an HKS RSR intake kit or something else?

I thoroughly read the ultimate intake poll and thread but the ETS wasn't on there or was before it's time. The HKS RSR got the best reviews, had better dyno and flow rates, got highly praised for it's sound, but filtration sucked with some saying it only sucked because they didn't replace the filters at the recommended intervals. However I think I saw they upgraded their filters??--Not sure on this though.

So if I go with a new intake kit, is the HKS still the best, and is the filtration issues just a matter of replacing the filters at the recommended intervals or should I go with something else since as I said, there are a lot of coal trucks where I live that like to make things quite dusty.

And on a lot of intake threads most seem to advise to stay away from oiled filters because they leak into the MAF and can make it go wonky. <- This seemed to be the consensus on this site from what I've read....which was a lot lol

I had an HKS powerflow on my evo 4, looks very similar to the RSR. Mine was the non oiled, non washable kind. I am sure they produce amazing dyno results because they don't filter anything. I would sooner use a sock from my sock drawer than put this thing back on. Assuming my HTML fu is working, that is a picture of my intake, complete with a floor of oily mud nearly 1/4 of a cm thick. That is what made it through the filter in 6 months, ate the rings and made then engine start spewing oil out the PCV.

Not sure I buy the changing interval story, because it never got dirty. If anything the filtration should have got better. I could understand if it was oiled but it is not.

the intake pipe will never be perfectly clean due to the pcv recirc.

to the OP, if youd like to not spend a lot of money, look up the amsoil dry filter. it was proven to be pretty good at filtering and making power.

shameless plug, i also happen to have one with a maf adapter sitting around...
