EVO 9 grinds on 5th gear
#3
It's pretty much standard. Just replacing the synchro with another stock unmodified synchro won't fix it. If you want the trans to shift well, you need to send it out and have it gone through by someone like TRE who modifies the synchro's to work better, and does all of his other tricks that make the trans way better than stock.

My 03 did the same, shifting into 5th at any speed over 60 and down into 4th. I did the usual, change the transmission fluid, shifter cable bushings, base bushings, still did it. Rebuild is the only thing that fixed my problem, more common problem in the 03-04 transmissions, but guess the later ones still can have it as well.

Yes I know it's a common / standard thing for these EVO 8 and 9's. Just wanted to see what anyone else has done or tried. When I put it in 5th gear slower than the other gears it doesn't grind but I figured getting new synchros. But I will check the dealer to see if there's a recall or something. Thanks guys

When I had a warranty I went in to get sychro's replaced and they blamed the fault on the boost controller since having more horsepower wore them out? Anywho good luck getting synchro's replaced for free, and if you have mods, that'll be wishful thinking. Don't even waste the gas at that point.

I went ahead and got my trans rebuilt to get rid of the problem, since then works like a champ. but it does seem like every evo I have dealt with (including mine and my wife's) have this problem. I can say Shep trans and Jacks do a good job.
