Can leaking water pump cause damage to timing belt?
So my water pump started leaking not too long ago. I went ahead and ordered a water pump, just the pump because the guy a bought it from did the timing about 10k miles ago. The shop i took it too said i should do timing again because the coolant thats been leaking could of gone on it and it could ruin it and that i should just go ahead and buy the kit from them. Personally i think thats bull. When i look at the leak it doesnt even look like it gets on the timing belt. Looks like it just drips down onto the oil pan

A coolant leak from the water pump would either get behind the timing belt or in front of it, not directly on it. The plastic timing covers should have also helped to keep coolant off the timing belt. The most I would do is spray everything down with MAF cleaner since it's sensor safe just to freshen things up, but I wouldn't change the timing belt especially if it has not been leaking for too long.

There is internet conversation on if coolant can damage rubber belts & most note that it will not but should be washed off
I agree w/you that if the water pump was leaking out of the weep hole, it may not have contacted the timing belt but pull the timing belt cover & check if the belt is wet
