Best First Upgrade for EVO8?
Hey guys, what is a good first upgrade for a stock evo8? Looking for upgrade reccomendations without tuning.
Saw EVO in Import tuner and thought that may be a good upgrade path.
Concerned about losing boost with certain upgrades and no tuning. What upgrades can I do without tuning? Also if I where to get tuning done, where in NJ could I go? And what equip do you recommend?

If you want to make the car faster. Do the exhast with downpipe and high flow cat/testpipe. On top of an extra 30-40hp to the wheels most afternmarket exhast are much lighter. 30 lbs lighter with some systems.
Next best mod to make power is cams.
In take and blow off valve are more for show. I have both.
For handeling adding a rear strut bar and larger rear sway bar also helps. The front underbracing helps alot as well.

Long Term
Look long term. Don't buy cheap stuff and take it off 2 months later.
My suggestion--- pick a staged upgrade path (Vishnu, Buschur, Boost Solutions, ....anyone) follow their upgrade path. Do not stray too much. This make for a better match down the line on parts / tuning / settings. Trust me you will be looking to others for settings. This will help in the long run....
I have gone with the Vishnu path. I am VERY happy with my results. Just be paitent on getting parts in. This is a limited production car and the parts for it are very limited production!
If you want to rebel I suggest....
Alarm (2-way, pager)
gauges (gotta watch the boost, oil, egt)
down pipe (biggest restriction)
boost controller (get more outa what u got)
turbo timer (if you are going to run your car hard!)
cat-back
hi-flow cat/ test pipe
cam gears -3-3 or up to -5-5
cams 246I 272E
fuel pump
intercooler upgrade
As always to the DIY stuff. do the intercooler screen soon, then the grounding kit.

reflash/piggyback/ecu control of some sort. immediatly frees up some power and if you have one with user tuneability you can maximize the performance of all your other mods

Thanks for the advice, keep the recommendations coming
BTW I put snow tires on for the winter and just figured that I'd let you know how they worked out.
Used Semperit Sport Grip
They are great, the damn car rallies through the snow. I picked em because they are still speed rated up to about 130 or so. Was going to get the blizzaks but found out that these tires are used for winter rallying on lots of german cars and I have to say that they really run great on regular ground. And as I hoped in the snow and rain. Just a little lack in steering response but you would expect that out of any snow tire. I'm falling in love with this EVO so much that I think its almost time to sell the 996.

The are a lot of upgrade paths you can make..
My 1st step was:
Buschur 3inch Turbo-Back Exhaust
Buschur Intake
Blitz SBC ID
SAFC
Tuned @ Pruven with 293AWHP @20psi
added HKS camshafts 272/272 and Denso 660cc injectors about 2 weeks after tune and ran 12.2@113mph
This was last summer and I am way passed that now...

Mods + and -'s
Too many vendors would get into a pissing contest. All in all they are pretty equal for like parts. For example: Greddy Type S Blow-off valve is very popular and might give 5whp but a shop that carries apexi BOV's might say theirs adds 6 to show up the Greddy......SO WHAT! All like parts have the same function and return similar gains.
My suggestion is to look at where you want to get too and buy parts that can handle that amount of power. Don’t buy the 1000cc injectors if you want 300whp. Save your money and use the stock ones.
My non-professional opinion...
BOV- minimal gains (5whp). Better as a drivability upgrade.
Intake- minimal gains (possible loss-debatable) We had two identical cars on the same dyno back to back last month and the other with an intake made 319 whp. Mine made 320 whp with the stock airbox. No difference?!?!
Exhaust- dunno
Cams / cam gears- stand alone mod maybe 30 whp. HUGE gains with matched chip/tuning
Piggyback/Stand Alone/Boost controller- 30-60 whp depending on chip and tuning. This allows you to add cams and other parts and tune to match.
Intercooler- dunno Too rich for my blood right now.
The trick is getting the combination right and getting it tuned to work together!!!! Look at my mods below. I made 320 whp and gobs of torque on a dynojet dyno (accurate dyno maybe even reading low for what I heard from others). This same dyno reads 219 for a stock Evo.
