Evo 9 4g63 ticking noise diagnosis

Hey all,

I've an evo 9 with a built 4g63 that has developed a nasty ticking noise when running. It's much louder than lifter tick and audible throughout the whole rev range.
Anyone got any experience with this sound able to tell me what it could be?
Here is a short clip I've taken of the noise

Thanks in advance

Sounds like lifter tick to me. I went through a similar noise I was chasing down, and ended up being the lifters. I would bleed the lifters and see if that helps.

I've pulled the cover off and everything looks okay. I've been suspecting lifters but don't have any spares to confirm..

Bleed the lifters. This solved my ticking that sounds similar to yours.

I've organised new gsc zero ticks to swap over. Wish me luck!

Good luck. It's so loud that I would have guessed rod knock.

I'm going to agree with lifters, or at least top end.

Though I have a tick similar, and I'm on my 2nd set of Zero Ticks with the same noise.

Yes, I suspected Rod knock as well. That will be the next thing I'll be checking.

They currently have GSC zero ticks in there atm that aren't very old, perhaps 5k km's on them. They could possibly have gone bad so I'm going to replace them all with new ones, while the cams are out.

Go under the car and listen Hopefully it’s not rod knock but prepare for the worse.

For rod knock diagnosis, set the parking brake, clutch in, transmission in 1st gear. Raise engine speed slightly so it knocks loudly. Very slowly disengage the clutch holding the throttle open. if the knock goes away while slowly engaging the clutch, it's a bad rod bearing or several. Unfortunately, I know that this method works for diagnosis- although it was not on my Evo.

I've finally gotten back to the evo. I've installed new gsc lifters and the issue persists.

I've just checked all rod bearings and there is no play in them. Stumped!

Balance shaft seems to have a bit of play.. Would it be safe to remove balance belt on the timing side and run car without to determine if that is the knock?

You will still have the opposite spinning balance shaft that is connected to your oil pump. Your engine will shake with just 1 balance shaft.
