I used to swear by consumer reports, but my other passions (woodworking and home entertainment) taught me how short sighted they are on a lot of things. I think they review the bread-and-butter products in every field quite well, but when you get into the upper echelon, then they lose their way fast.
Like recommending a Pioneer receiver over a Marantz because the Pioneer was easier to set up. Yeah, more features and better performance will always require more setup.
Same with cars. If you're considering a Tercel, Civic, and Focus and want help choosing, I'm sure they will help. If you're looking at the EVO, SRT4, and STI, They'll probably point you to the one most like a boring family sedan.
I've never seen forbes review cars before. I'll have to check that out.

I agree, I think CR is a good publication, but they are not geared for the enthusiast, they are geared towards people who want the minimum amount of hassle from the products they buy. A lot of people view a car the same way we might view a washing machine or dishwasher, and for them CR is the way to go. I would never recommend an evo to someone who doesn't care very much about cars; they wouldn't be happy with the compromises they'd have to make.
