Carmax offered me $22,500

This business with the possible Mitsubishi bankruptcy has me spooked and I'm considering selling so I took my EVO to Carmax today in Laurel, MD. It is stock with 8k miles and evaluated as excellent inside & out. Their offer was $22.5k which I thought was a little low. I have posted a separate FS thread but I thought the Carmax price might be of interest to others just to know what their cars are worth at the wholesale level.

Relax Dale_K. For consumers like us, financial troubles at Mitsubishi Motores will be transparent. An example is United Airlines. They declared bankrupcy and we still fly United. I would say, sell your EVO if you want to sell it, and not because financial issues at Mitsu.

My EVO is like yours. It is stock, absolutely spotless, nearly 10k miles and 13 months old. I guess $22.5k is about what I can expect if I sell it now. That is reality. After all a new one is about $27k range.

That's about right. I get similar values when I checked Edmunds.com

FWIW, My EVO is holding it's value better than my STI did.

Remember also, Carmax is a massive used car reseller. They make a name by selling used cars at lower than average prices. As such, they will also pay you less than the average price. The benefit, is that Carmax will actually pay you cash moeny instead of trade value.

Yeah, I thought Carmax was great when they gave my gf $1100 for her falling-apart-protege (nearest offer was $100 )

Then I took my Tiburon in to trade for an EVO, yeah, $400 under blue book, all because I had an aftermarket exhaust. Apparently they wanted the factory rust exhaust.

So I've seen the light. Unless you have a relatively new car (2 to three years old), no dealer really wants your trade-in, and recently I've heard that from actual sales guys.

A friend of mine took his STi with almost 7k miles and it was valued at $23,000 at CarMax.

CarMax gives low prices so that they can make alot of money when they resale the car. That simple. Doesn't matter the kind of car.

I've sold 3 other cars to Carmax and they gave me pretty good prices. Once I sold them a Z06 and they gave me $42.5. Their store in Laurel, MD is also a Mitsubishi new car dealer at the same site and I think that kind of worked against me since they can get all the new Mitsu's they want right from the factory. I've only got lukewarm interest in my FS post at $24k so maybe their offer is in line with the market. I don't think I'll sell it at $22.5 though.

There was a real raggedy EVO there at the same time as me yesterday. Many mods, running like ****. Carmax wouldn't give him a quote because they couldn't keep the car running. Then they screwed up and gave him my keys and me his keys. I'm telling the sales guy 'these aren't my keys' and he's saying they must be. We go out to my car and of course they don't work when I spotted the other EVO. The other guy must have brought both sets of keys with him because he had the car running (tons of black smoke). He knew he had somebody else's keys but he was going to keep them! The sales guy says 'did you get the right keys?' and the guy says no so we got it straightened out.
