Question whats the real #???

well you see when the JAP`s advertise the skyline, evo, sti.they say the HP rating is 275(i know they have to understate it for some type of law they have) .we all know that is BULL****!!!!!!cause no way is nissan going to give only 276 hp to the skyline when that is the beast of all imports.im getting a 2002 evo 7 in about 1-2 months.i would like to know what the real HP rating is at the fly wheel.cause our asian counter parts isnt giving us the asnwer

They actually all have 275 WHP, all dyno'd by the Japanese gov't to conform to their standards. However, the cars always come with super restrictive exhaust and intakes. That's why it's not unheard of for the cars to gain gobs of power with simple bolt ons. Take the old Supra we had hear in the States. Came with 300 + HP in it's USDM trim, but still, bone stock in Japan, came with the magic 275.

Well, the Japanese gov. doesn't actually dyno test new vehicles, unless somebody pisses them off - as in the case with the Subaru WRX STI 22b. That actually *had* to have only 276hp, whereas the 2.0-litre "plain jane" STI of the same year had around 300hp.

In the case of the recent Lancer Evolutions, Subaru STi's and Skyline GT-R's, all of them are actually in the 300-320hp range on the dyno after they are broken in. The GT-R is quick, but it isn't really quicker than the Evolution or STI in stock form. But Japanese owners of GT-R's never leave them stock - it's pointless to do so. You can say the same of Evolution owners and STI owners as well, though I think there is a higher percentage of actual stock STi owners than there is owners of stock Evolutions and GT-R's.

As I understood it, though, isn't the 300 hp roof a voluntary one?

I have watched Stock Jap Car racing between RX-7, R34, R-33, NSX-type S, NSX-S Zero, Evo 6 GSR, and Evo 6 RS. All running 280bhp Which is what all those jap car companies voluntarily have stock on thier cars. As far as a GT-R not being faster than an Evo makes you talk insane a Stock R-34 is alot faster than the Evo because its a totally different type of car with alot higher top end performance same goes for the rx-7 and the nsx. Im not saying that the GT-R is unbeatable but due I can guarantee that if you Run a Stock R-34 vs EVO the R-34 would def take it.

Having actually driven the R-34 in Nur spec form, m-spec form, and driven the Evolution 7 and the standard STI and S202 STI, yes, the Evo and the STI can "take" a GT-R. The STI, Evo, and GT-R have all nearly the same stock output from the factory, but the STI and Evo have much shorter gearing than the GT-R *and* are lighter. Off the line, they are quicker. If you were racing above 100mph, the GT-R will slaughter the STI and Evo at that point - but other than the shutoko races, there's not many battles that take place above 100mph. That's why you don't see many GT-R's doing the nightly mountain runs, while you will see plenty of Evo's, STI's, and Silvia's up there.

The GT-R is a massively fast car - just not in stock form. However, no owner of a GT-R that bought for anything besides poseur status leaves it stock.

Cheers,

Paul Hansen
