EVO vs turbo maxima

A buddy sent me this he saw on a nissan list the other day.

"My friend ran 14.2@98MPH in a BONE stock 6spd, witnessed it. Reason they are
slow from the factory ? ECU needs to be reset for optimum performance. I never
seen a EVO run anything lower than 14.6 around this part of the country, bone
stock that is. Yes I heard of people runing low 13s in them stock- but thats
with a launch that sooner or later is going to break something. Evo drive
train is not bullet proof, nor is the STis. Now the fastest NA Max runs low
13s- now I said NA. There are alot of TURBO Maximas out there, its something U
really don't wanna run. I have videos of 11 sec daily driven Maximas runing
cars like SS camaros w/NOS, huge T66 fed DSMs, T3/T4 SR20s, even the new
supercharged Cobras- and from a roll...... nothing beats a 500WHP stock
engine, stock injector, stock ECU, Max. People just don't realize what the VQ
engine can do.... AEBS claims that the VQ block is the new gen Supra block-
where it can withstand insane amounts of power. Yes its FWD, but like I
said... 30K bux for a new "Rally" car, or 10K for a used 00 SE 5spd Max throw
in bout 5K for an awesome turbo kit, and no "Rally" car with the harriest mods
will walk ya on the highway. I can afford an EVO, or a STI, but I know with MY
driving that car wouldn't last me more than a few months and something would
be broken- I abuse cars not drive em. My Maxima has lasted me a verrry long
time now, give me a free EVO or STI and I will turn around and sell it... not
a fan of em at all".

I'm not on that list, but here are my 4 replies to him.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The guy talks about nissans like my dad does about democrats. Janet could run a 14.6 in my EVO. Anyone who is not constantly talking **** knows they run mid to high 13's at worst with a very mild launch. As for 500 HP FWD. My buddy had a 350 HP FWD DSM. Completely useless under boost in first and second gears (unless you run slicks everywhere). Yes, it was killer on the highway, but he only walked my AWD talon (approx same HP) over 110. I like highway racing well over 100 as much as the next guy, but unless your a cop, how much can you do that in these parts and still have a lisc after a week? I've seen a used EVO for 22 already (hell, their barely a year old), give it a couple years. Ad 4K of Bushcur parts and it runs an honest 11.6 @ 118. That would easily run with a turbo max to 130-140. I wouldn't want to be in a Max over 140, where as the EVO is rock stable at that and higher speeds. I like the idea of a $15K highway killer, but otherwise, it totally sucks off the line, sucks in the rain, brakes and handles like **** (compartively). It's funny how the real fast AWD DSM's, low 11,s and 10's spin all 4 wheels through first and second. WTF are you going to do with a 500+ HP FWD maxima, EXCEPT race on the highway??

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

raving over a high 14 second run here, http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=304093
but this guy just happens to be the god of nissans, had akiller driver, and managed to see one stock max run a 14.2. Who cares, one stock EVO ran a 12.9, don't mean nothin.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I rest my case. He spins em @ 113??? Thats real usefull!!!! Interesting how an EVO runs almost 2 seconds faster with the same power. 113 MPH @ 370 HP SUCKS!!!

This guy claims 367HP (see farther down), but a tranny every 2 months?? So much for bullet proof (and he is not even using slicks yet).

yeah... i've got a 97 maxima... no turbo tho. i've heard the engine can hold up to a lot... mine has over 150k miles on it and it still runs trouble free, despite the fact that i really make it move once in a while. it is a FWD, so even with decent tires, if you have enough HP under the hood, wheelspin will be an issue. but anyway, i'm still waiting to drive an evo, tho i'm sure that the evo will probably always be able to outperform the max on the twisties... you can tune the max to handle well, but it still will be a family sedan, not a rally-bred car. still, they both have great potential. yep just my thoughts

How this guy even begin to compare a FWD 3600 pound family sedan to an AWD beast? Not to mention, the Evo creates scary power from just 2 liters; the maxima has 3.5, and in my book, that's a pretty big engine. And like everyone mentioned before, you can't get away with highway racing for a long period of time; and who would feel safe in a maxima? I've read so many stories of people toping out the evo and feeling completely glued to road.....

Exclamation

I sold my '98 Maxima SE to my mom to buy an Evolution.

I highly considered buying a turbo kit from HLH ... there were
a number of factors against buying it however.

1) I had an automatic, 13% of all 4th Gen Maximas sold were 5spd so it's
extremely rare to find a 5spd to convert or buy.

2) The transmission will continue to go out over and over again from what
I had read despite having a tranny cooler, cryo treated gears, etc.

3) HLH is/was selling his turbo'd Maxima for $12,000 or so. (hmm) Which is/was
a 12.41 with street tires and NOS. Quite possibly faster then that from the
videos I've watched.

4) FWD, handling just isn't there.

The two cars are totally different, I occasionally drive the Maxima for long
drives. It's a great affordable luxury car with a ton of room and decent power.
It's just not in the same league as the Evolution.

Really thats wierd i have a stock 03 maxima SE and my MOM blew the tranny. yes it is a torquey car, but it turns like ****, looks like **** and well if i wanted to look like everyone else on the road i would drive it, let me run your super duper maxima from a dig and ill see who wins the race, better yet lets go through the twisties. Just remeber its a maxima, a nice every day car but a weekend warrior it will never be.

Comparing apples to oranges!!! Stock evo versus a turbo'd Max comon. Might as well compare Boost Solutions Evo to the Turbo'd Max. Highly modified versus Highly modified

if i wanted to buy a car to make go fast i would buy a 91 mustang notch back, people who buy evos buy them because they are fun. go to a nissan forum and tell him he is full of ****, its a maxima, and the trannys are **** if pushed anything over 300 hp, granted they can do awsome burnouts from a dig, overall, yes i own one but i would never try to make it faster than it is, people need to understand maxima is not made to bee a 700 hp fire breathing monster, they are there for middle class adults who want something somewhat sporty with everyday practicality, and enough power to put civics and celica in their place every once in a while. just my .02
