I don't think that s h i t exist. I was given the same so called temp. ins. too when I bought my car. I think its just to make you buy the car and sign all the paperwork before you change your mind. look into it more.

Illegal? dont' know. It may depend on which state you live in.

In Ca you have a grace period to provide proof that you have insurance or the bank will start getting pissed.

Temporary Insurance from the dealership? Never heard of such service. The only thing you have a grace period on is a inspection sticker.

You should have PERMANENT Insurance before you leave that dealership with your new car.

I really dont know the laws around there, but if they wrote that down on paper that you purchased temporary insurance, I would think it would be against the law since the dealership isnt an insurance carrier or any sort. What would happen if you left the dealeship than gotten into a car accident, totalling your car, and badly injuring yourself? Then finding out that this temp. insurance was a big fraud just to make an extra few hundred dollars?

I would go to your local State Insurance Bureau ASAP and ask if this is legal.

I dont think its a matter of being illegal. Here is the deal, if you are financing the car they wont let you off the lot without insurance. The bank requires it. Most insurance companies will cover you automaticaly for 7-14 days if you already have another car covered. Call your insurance to find out. If you paid cash they should let you drive it away, but as stated above that would depend on the state you live in. (Some states wont let the dealer register your car without proof of insurance)

yeah they don't sell it to you, your current insurance provides it automatically, that's shady if they try to sell something to you that you already have. but i guess if this is your first car and you aren't insured you have to do something special.
