Red Line 75W90
#107
Sorry guys....I meant to say that I have been running 75w-90 in my transfer case since the week I bought it. MTL, MT-90, or BG synchroshift would be a good choice for the transmission. The trans needs GL4 and the transfer case and rear call for GL5.
Grod,
I had a problem with my rear after 700 miles. I never changed the rear fluid. Just the trans and transfer case. The dealer put different fluid in the rear and it was fixed.

So I am safe running the 2:1 (MTL:MT90) = 75-85w mix in the trans and
75w-90 in the transfer case and rear axle ?

Mark,
MTL is actually a 70W80.
When mixing two different viscosities together
the result is basically between the two but not
exactly varying slightly. There isn't an 86.5
viscosity, there is an 80, 85, 90...etc. An 85
weight is between 11 and 13.5 cSt@100°C, the
blend falls within that range.
These transaxles typically shift a little better
at lower temperatures with the blend of the MTL
and MT-90, I would recommend using 1 quart MT-90
then the remaining almost 2 quarts MTL. This
would offer both good shiftability and good
protection for components.

I went with the 2:1 MTL/MT90 Mix in the trans, 80-140 in the transfer case, and 75-90 in the rear end (All Redline). I would rather have the extra cushion in the transfer case. I think the shockproof will work fine in the transfer case..

i bought pennzoil synchromesh for the transmission and i think im sticking with that but...
i bought redline 75w-90 for the transfer case and rear diff.
should i?
how much is it if i ask the dealership to just use OE fluids for the tc and rear diff?

If its 75-90NS dont use it.. It doesnt have any friction modifiers, and when i put it in my rear diff i had chattering. The Redline Heavy Shockproof works Greaaaat in the Transfer Case and is highly recomended by Road Race Engingeering, If you live in a colder climate go with the Light Shock Proof, Hotter go with the Heavy. As for Tranny, Penzoil Synchromesh is Awsome, and was suggested to me by the Mitsubishi mechanic himself. I now put 75-90w Mobil One Gear Fluid in my rear diff and have had 0 problems or noises. Great stuff.. Thats my Combo.. there are many others, but for me.. i feel safe and content using these.

Here is what another Redline tech said

Nick,
In your transaxle I would recommend a blend of MTL and MT-90, add the
MT-90 then fill with a little over a quart of MTL. In the transfer
case and rear differential I would recommend the 75W90.

i have MT-90 in the transmission
75w90 in the transfer case and rear differential. I have had it for about 5k miles. no problems. shifting has smoothened out over time. all in all i like the combination. I might next time switch to redline heavyweight shockproof in the transfer case. but i dunno

A buddy of mine and myself put in Redline Heavy Shockproof in both the Transfer Case and Rear Differential. You guys think that putting the Heavy Shockproof in the rear is ok?

AMSOIL Series 2000 75W-90
Goodmorning, I've been following this thread for awhile and would like to chime in on my experience .
I want to note up front that the EVO is my weekend car which means I don't have many miles . I only occassionally get notchy shifting??? going into first from neutral.
I switch from OEM to Redline MT90 for transmission and Redline 75W-90 for rear and transfer case. With the redline MT90, I did not perceive any difference from the OEM fluid. There was still the ocassional notchiness going into first .
I got the bushing/synchromesh kit from Lancershop. I first swapped out the two bushing in the engine. Boy what a significant improvement in feel. Everything seems so TIGHT . But, the notchiness going into first was still there . I followed with replacing the MT90 with the Synchromesh. Viola!! no more notchiness . But then I read this thread on why Synchromesh isn't good for EVO trannies. And this bothered me .
I've researched AMSOIL lubes and asked them if their Series 2000 gear lube was safe for synchros. Their reply was yes their oil is good for hyploid type gears but the formulation does not harm "yellow" metals. I replaced the Synchromesh with the AMSOIL 2000 75w-90 and the shifting is just as smooth and silky . YMMV but I would definitely recommend using the AMSOIL over the Redline. When I get around to it, I will also replace the rear diff with the AMSOIL. I am not sure what to do about the Xfer case since it requires 90W only. I am not an oil expert but it seems to me that 75W-90 should be serviceable for something that requires 90W. Since both spec is 90. I know this was a long post but hope it helps.
